#pemberlittens I couldn‘t help myself and I finished today. I have mixed emotions of this one. I found so many party hilarious and Lady Susan‘s antics very modern except that she hurt so many people with complete disregard. I felt Lady Susan could have been an amazing feminist figure if she wasn‘t a complete jerk. I found the treatment of her daughter disturbing and so I see no redemption for Lady Susan. I really enjoyed despite Lady Susan!

#pemberlittens I was so happy to do this buddy read, but I am not sure so would have finished it it I was required to read more than a chapter a day. I loved that this was grittier than a Jane Austen novel and really delved into conflicts between the upper class and the working class. I also loved Mr. Thornton‘s transformation and the moments of feminism. However, I did find big chunks of this novel boring and unnecessary. I agree with others👇

MicrobeMom that Gaskell used the death of characters to move the plot along. I also found there was little to no humor in this book which I find very different from Austen‘s novels. Lastly, I found Margaret a disappointing protagonist. Just when I felt she was going to come into her own and live up the feminist ideal she does not. I felt this in several places in the book. I am happy I read this and did enjoy doing the chapter a day report! 1mo

#pemberlittens #chapter52NS Finally!! In our last chapter Margaret and Mr. Lennox spend lots of time talking properties and not marriage much to Edith‘s chagrin. The next day Mr. Lennox, Mr. Thornton, & Margaret are to meet but Mr. Lennox never shows. Margaret is forced to meet with John alone. She tries ineloquently to explain that she want to give him some of her money to stay in business. This quickly devolves into again ineloquent 👇👇

#pemberlittens #Chapter50NS Trade is bad in Milton and John‘s business has not recovered since the strike. His bet on the Irish workers ended up being disastrous. John‘s brother-in-law wants him to dump his borrowed money into some speculation scheme. After a dramatic talks with Mrs. Thornton he decides not too and is forces to give up his business. While he is offer a few positions, he is waiting for the right one. He also finds👇👇

MicrobeMom out that the speculation scheme made his brother-in-law a very rich man. During all of this, because he was forced to borrow money, Margaret somehow becomes his landlord through the properties she inherited from Mr. Bell. Also, Higgins reveals that Fred was in Milton at the time of Mrs. Hale‘s death. John is comforted that Margaret never did anything improper. He now regains his respect of her. I have 8 pages left and It is killing me! (edited) 1mo

MicrobeMom Other. Margaret and Mr. Thornton discuss what it means to be a gentleman vs just “a man”. When their conversation is interrupted by more strike business. Something is afoot but Margaret doesn‘t know what. 2mo
MicrobeMom I was actually a little disappointed they was. It more banter in this chapter. It was like Mrs. Thornton wasn‘t even there and John and Margaret barely speak. 2mo

jenniferw88 This chapter shows John falling more in love with Margaret, and Margaret beginning (finally!) to fall in love with John. Can't reveal much more without *spoilers* 2mo
MicrobeMom @jenniferw88 yes this chapter does hint at the beginning of some feels on Margaret‘s end. John is entranced by her beauty when all dressed up. Thanks. I forgot those points. Probably the most important. 2mo
CrowCAH Gah, I know. I would like more conversations between John and Margaret! 2mo
Julsmarshall Yes, more from Margaret and John. Anyone else feel writes calling him John? Such a Mr. Thornton to me. 2mo
inthegreensandblues "But he never went near her himself; he did not look at her. Only, he knew what she was doing- or not doing- better than he knew the movements of anyone else in the room." This is how I am when in a room with my crush. ?? 2mo
LitStephanie @inthegreensandblues @jenniferw88 my favorite part of this chapter is that Margaret finally sees John comfortable amongst his peers. We all show different parts of ourselves depending on who is around, and she likes this version of him. 2mo
MicrobeMom @LitStephanie yes totally agree!! I think we all like this version of Mr. Thornton! 2mo

#pemberlittens #chaptwer19NS Mrs. Hale is fussing over what dress Margaret should wear to the Thornton‘s. John continues his lessons with Mr. Hale and feels confident in his sound economic principles. It is clear he knows of Mrs. Hale‘s illness by the pity in his eyes. Margaret visits Bessy twice. Once, she learns that Bessy had dreamed of her before meeting her and wants to see her all gussied up for the Thornton‘s dinner. The second 👇👇👇

MicrobeMom the neighbor Boucher is visiting complaining that his children are starving to death because the strike. Margaret truly see the effects the strike is having on the hands and offers any money and food she can to help the family. I do notthink Mr. Thornton has no idea what it is like for these families. 2mo
CrowCAH I had to look up the word clemming. No doubt everyone was hungry. (edited) 2mo

#pemberlittens #chapter18NS I felt this was a filler chapter. Mr. Hale remains unaware of exactly what is ailing Mrs. Hale but has some clue that is bad. Then convinces himself that she looks better. The Hales get invited to a dinner of the Thornton‘s‘. Margaret and Mr. Hale will attend. Mrs. Thornton is unsure if she like Margaret or not because she likes her fight but she is uppity. Mr. Thornton is upset to learn that Margaret would 👇👇👇

MicrobeMom Not consider him as a potential husband. Conversation then turns to the strike which will happen at the end of the week. John and Mrs. Thornton have very elitist thoughts and talk about the hands being ignorant. John decides to give his hand 2 weeks and then he will hire workers from Ireland. 2mo
CrowCAH He gets upset when she doesn‘t seem to like him! Eek he does have feelings!!! 2mo

#pemberlittens #Chapter17NS Margaret goes for a walk about town. She sees all kinds of men out on the street and decides to visit Bessy. Mr. Higgins is home and tells Margaret that the men are striking in 5 favorites including Mr. Thornton‘s because they have been asked to work for lower wages. Bessy is distressed by the strike, Mr. Hale newly free time might lead him to drink, and she hates his smoking in the house. Margaret sees she is 👇👇

MicrobeMom depressed. She suggests she start reading other more uplifting parts of the Bible. Margaret offers to come read these passages to her. Bessy likes the idea especially if Mr. Higgins is around, but she will not give up reading Revelations. It comforts her. 2mo
CrowCAH Yes, don‘t give up the doom and gloom passages of the Bible! Margaret was only trying to help. 2mo
LitStephanie @CrowCAH exactly! You know you have lived in a really drab place all your life when you are addicted to Revelations for crying out loud. 2mo
Julsmarshall So true all! 2mo

#pemberlittens #chapter16NS Dr. Davidson arrives and examines Mrs. Hale. When he finishes, her tells Margaret Mrs. Hales doesn‘t want him to share her personal health concerns with her daughter. But he does anyway ( no HIPAA at this time 😂) He tells Margaret she is dying but Gaskell does not reveal what disease she has (unless I missed it somewhere). Margaret vows to nurse her mother.

jenniferw88 You didn't miss it... I checked my book's notes and it doesn't even say it there. 2mo
AllDebooks Nope, doesn't mention the suspected illness. I was a perturbed about the lack of ethics, does it not count because they're both women? 🙄 2mo

Julsmarshall Definitely a sad chapter but starting to see a few layers to our characters 😊 2mo
nanuska_153 @MicrobeMom @jenniferw88 I think it's just that the author couldn't bother looking into it and picking an illness, because it says that the doctor "spoke two short sentences in a low voice" but we don't know what he tells her 2mo
MicrobeMom @jenniferw88 thanks for the confirmation! It was a rough day and I read this chapter quick! 2mo
MicrobeMom @AllDebooks I have no doubt if it had been Mr. Hale the doctor would not have shared his diagnosis! 2mo
MicrobeMom @nanuska_153 I think Gaskell wanted us to be guessing. I feel she did this on purpose so we would come to our own conclusion. We really do know little of what actually ails her. 2mo
MicrobeMom @Julsmarshall I agree Mrs. Hale seems much strong than she is and we learn some more about Dixon. 2mo
CrowCAH I really wished it came out what she had. Kinda drove me nuts. 2mo
batsy I was curious about why the nature of the illness wasn't revealed, either. Was thinking maybe we find out later? 2mo
eeclayton @CrowCAH I agree. Tell us or don't tell us, but don't tease us with whispering characters in the scene. 2mo
nanuska_153 @MicrobeMom we just know it's painful and not contagious, maybe back then it was obvious 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo

#pemberlittens #chapter15NS Margaret and Mr. Hale visit Mrs. Thornton. The conversation does not go well but she likes Margaret‘s frankness and tells them of an upcoming strike. Then goes on a tirade about masters and slaves. Mr. Thornton visits the Hales later in the evening where he and Margaret have a thorough discussion of the economics of Milton. The arguments are ultimately, Mr. Thornton-it is my business and my money and I will 👇👇👇
