My five-year old and I actually read Animal Tales which is a collection of five stories about different animals by Dick King-Smith, including Guard Dog. We really liked a couple of the stories but the others took us a while to get through. And one of them was a pretty weird concept for a five-year old.

Not giving up on the author yet. Going to put Pig Dog on our list.
