Hahahahaha - at me from 5 years ago being like “gonna read this soon” THE OPTIMISM! I am still totally planning on reading this soon!

I also miss this fence from the clothes line courtyard of my old apartment building. It was just aesthetically pleasing!

ravenlee “Soon” is such a relative term… 11mo

I'm making my way through Nix's Old Kingdom stories. Apparently I'm gonna have to get a book of short stories that I don't have yet, To Hold the Bridge. I'm thinking I might try to buy an ebook version, if it's available.

tokorowilliamwallace I like this cover art. It reminds of the literary classics editions. 3y

Total cover buy.

I‘m often hesitant to buy second hand books online because quality can vary wildly but I did get drawn in with a free shipping offer 😂 may have bought a couple of books 😂

I‘ve not read this one yet but I‘ve been thinking about going back to the Old Kingdom... I‘d love to do it chronologically (rather than published order) has anyone done it?

BookaholicNatty These look interesting I have never heard of them before!! 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @BookaholicNatty, he‘s an Australian author... his books have had many covers over the year but I like the vintage fantasy feel of this edition 6y
MockTurtle The Abhorsen series is one of my all-time favorites! The Old Kingdom story in this volume turns out to be essential (IMHO) to understanding what goes on in subsequent novels. 6y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @MockTurtle, awesome! I read the original trilogy many moons ago but not the two newish ones or this novella - time to go back! 6y
MockTurtle I definitely recommend reading both this story and the one in To Hold the Bridge before reading Clariel and (especially) Goldenhand. 6y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @MockTurtle, good information, thank you! I was going to start with Clariel. Will try to track down To Hold The Bridge. 6y
JLaurenceCohen I'm reading Goldenhand now and loving it 6y

Pickpick

Nix includes one novella set in the same world as his Abhorsen series and several short stories published from 1987 to 2005 in this eclectic short story collection that really show his writing chops. The novella was the weakest, but I really enjoyed the humor in "My Really Epic New Fantasy Series" and the choose your own adventure send up "Down to the Scum Quarter." Nix introduces each story with a little on its inspiration. Worthwhile reading.

I enjoyed this series of short stories, but can't say I loved them as a whole. There are several gems in here including 'The Hill', 'Endings', and 'Lightning bringer''. I think what kept me from loving this collection is that they don't necessarily sit well together, fitting into many different genres and styles of writing. Although I enjoyed all of the stories I found the whole experience of reading this collection quite Jarring.

Love this little preface Garth nix put in about how he started writing and his writing process. For some reason I absolutely love that he writes some of his stories out longhand before putting them in the computer. It makes me feel a kinship with him, I guess because I still love the act of writing things out by hand myself

Tackling this next. Hoping the short stories fit with my crazy busy schedule. I love the abhorsen books and shade's children was really good as well.
