In Full Flight: A Story of Africa and Atonement | John Heminway
3 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
A woman's quest for a new life in Africa in the wake of World War II -- and a heroic career that hid a secret past. Over the span of fifty years, Dr. Anne Spoerry, French by birth, treated hundreds of thousands of individuals across rural Kenya. A member of the renowned Flying Doctors Service, Spoerry earned the cherished nickname "Mama Daktari"--"Mother Doctor"--from the people of Kenya. Yet few knew what drove her from post-World War II Europe to Africa. Now, in the first comprehensive story of her life, her revered selflessness gives way to a past marked by rebellion and submission, during which she earned another nickname--this one sinister working as a "doctor" in a Nazi concentration camp. In Full Flight explores the question of whether it is possible to rewrite one's troubled past simply by doing good in the present. Informed by Spoerry's own journals, a trove of previously untapped files, and numerous interviews with those who knew her in Europe or Africa, John Heminway takes readers on a remarkable journey through Africa and into a dramatic life punctuated by both courage and weakness and driven by a powerful need to atone.

Happy Pub Day to In Full Flight! This is a terrific narrative nonfiction of Anne Spoerry, a doctor who spent almost 50 years caring for the people of Kenya who would otherwise have had almost no access to health care. Only she has a questionable past in WWII. This is a taut book that reads like a good thriller. I found it fascinating.

Here‘s my January wrap up. I‘m not sure how I managed to read this many books. I don‘t think I‘ve done this since I was a kid! I‘m definitely happy with my ratio of #MountTBR books read to books acquired. Favorites are the tagged book and Nasty Women.

Chelleo Whoa 😮 🤩🤩🤩 rock star reading!! 6y

DivaDiane Amazing! Does that say 17.5 female authors? How does that happen? (edited) 6y
Hooked_on_books @DivaDiane Thanks! And I knew someone would call that out. 😂 One of my books had 2 authors, one male and one female. So I called that 0.5. 6y
DivaDiane @Hooked_on_books Haha! That makes sense now! 6y

Pickpick

This fascinating nonfiction reads like a thriller and explores the life of Dr Anne Spoerry, who spent nearly 50 years providing medical care in Kenya to those who would likely have otherwise gone without. However, her past in WWII is gradually revealed, showing the complexity of human nature and potential results of desperation. This one will leave you uncomfortable and thinking through many questions. It‘s terrific. Pub date 2/13.
