Cringeworthy
Cringeworthy: A Theory of Awkwardness | Melissa Dahl
11 posts | 7 read | 11 to read
New York magazine's "Science of Us" editor explains the compelling psychology of awkwardness, and why learning to accept your cringeworthy moments can be a social advantage. Have you ever said goodbye to someone, only to discover that you're both walking in the same direction? Or had your next thought fly out of your brain in the middle of a presentation? Or accidentally liked an old photo on someone's Instagram or Facebook, thus revealing yourself to be a creepy social media stalker? Melissa Dahl, editor of New York magazine's "Science of Us" website, has experienced all of those awkward situations, and many more. Now she offers a thoughtful, original take on what it really means to feel awkward. She invites you to follow her into all sorts of mortifying moments, such as reading her middle school diary on stage in front of hundreds of strangers, striking up conversations with busy New Yorkers on the subway, and even taking improv comedy lessons. She also draws on research to answer questions you've probably pondered at some point, such as: * Why are situations without clear rules most likely to turn awkward? * Are people really judging us as harshly as we think they are? * Does anyone ever truly outgrow their awkward teenage self? If you can learn to tolerate life's most cringeworthy situations -- networking, difficult conversations, hearing the sound of your own terrible voice -- your awkwardness can be a secret weapon to making better, more memorable impressions. When everyone else is pretending to have it under control, you can be a little braver and grow a little bigger.

I loved this book!! I thought it was so fun. The writing style is pretty conversational, but pretty much like reading a very long psych article. It‘s reading about everyone‘s expert topic: yourself. It gives you a few new lens to look through. And if nothing else from this book, I took away a huge interest in the comedy show Mortified and can‘t wait to attend a show! I‘m already halfway through the show‘s podcast!

My pen pal @JackOBotts is absolutely top notch! I love everything in my Christmas happy! I am looking forward to reading both of these books. And honestly there is no statement truer than “one can never have too many notebooks.” Many many Christmas blessings!

I related to this book so much--I am that person who has to get up and leave the room when someone on TV embarrasses themselves. It was a relief to learn that I am not the only one who suffers from "cringe attacks" when old memories pop up out of nowhere. Dahl takes an in depth and often hilarious look at the concept of social awkwardness and cringe, and it was absolutely fascinating.

I tried so hard to make this work! I invested 90 minutes that I can‘t get back. I just couldn‘t do it. Read this if you want a full book devoted to just one word. #bail

Author Melissa Dahl explores all things awkwardness, starting with a broad definition and then exploring those moments all of us find intensely uncomfortable, using both scientific studies and anecdotes from her own life. Why do we feel uncomfortable on other people's behalf? Why is it weird to run into a coworker at the store? You may just find yourself reframing those awkward moments and being a little more accepting of yourself as a result.

1. Saw in the news that LibraryThing had acquired Litsy and decided to check it out
2. Yes, since 2006. Started in a notebook and now it's all online
3. Buying not so much, but reading absolutely (I mostly read library books)
4. Cringeworthy by Melissa Dahl and Beartown by Fredrik Backman

Chellebearss I have too many library books out right now and I blame Litsy and LIbrary Thing :-) 6y
bell7 @Chellebearss yup, too many good books and not enough time to read them all! 6y

I am basically a walking bundle of awkward, so naturally I had to request this from the library. I found it extremely relatable and energizing in the way that popular science and psychology books can be. Now I want to go through my awkward teenage writing again 😂😂
