Supporting Alabama authors by reading the tagged book.

Synopsis:

"In an immersive Southern Gothic with echoes of Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, a restauranteur lured by pandemic-era incentives moves her family to a seemingly idyllic small town in Georgia, only to discover a darkness lurking beneath the Southern hospitality and sun-dappled streets..."

It's got those eerie vibes (chapter 10, p 91)

Y'all know I know my serial killers 😬💋 the book is decent and I'm trying to get into the Netflix show but it's kind of a buzzkill because I know the story already. People are so shocked with the show. Do they not know what mentally/emotionally deranged individuals are capable of? Dahmer's story is definitely one of the more disturbing/fascinating from a mental illness standpoint. Spooky season #truecrime.

EvieBee Yeah, he was “a lot.” Disassociation is something that needs to be noticed early. 3y

I'm still reading The Stranger Beside Me and loving it. However, I started this Ann Rule tonight. I'm all set for some disturbing reading with this True Crime. I can't even imagine where children are concerned but I will literally read anything. I guess it's just my innate curiosity about what makes these monsters act in such heinous ways. Tell me more about Ann Rule...I love her already!! (I know she's passed away 😔)

Amiable I adore John Irving and this book! That is a throwback cover, too. 😳 3y
Bklover I remember that one from a long time ago! 3y
BookNAround I pulled this off my parents‘ shelves when I was about 12. It‘s the only book my mom ever took away from me. I just snuck it off again and I still remember some of the scenes in it (which probably validates the impulse to take it away from young me) even though I‘m 51 now. (edited) 3y

Took so long to finish but I was constantly mentally comparing and contrasting the book with the movie. It was good but too much sometimes. The whole story is creepy as hell, based on real life monsters. Good writing. I'm interested in more Thomas Harris but not anytime soon.

For nearly two years, almost every Thursday morning, rain or shine, they came to my house, and almost every time, I could not get over the shock of seeing them shed their mandatory veils and robes and burst into color. When my students came into that room, they took off more than their scarves and robes. Gradually, each one gained an outline and a shape, becoming her own inimitable self. Our world in that living room with its window framing...

bibliobliss ...my beloved Elburz Mountains became our sanctuary, our self-contained universe, mocking the reality of black-scarved, timid faces in the city that sprawled below. 4y

bibliobliss @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I'm not very far into the book yet but there's some scenes that got cut from the show and I'm glad (one scene in particular in the beginning is a bit much for the show, in my opinion).
