When Daine is summoned by the wolf pack that saved her life a year earlier, she knows she has to go. She and Numair travel to Dunlath Valley to answer the call. But when they arrive, Daine realizes with a shock that it's not just the animals whose lives are threatened; people are in danger too. Dunlath's rulers have discovered black opals in their valley and are dead set on mining the magic these stones embody. Daine learns that Dunlath's lord and lady plan to use this power to overthrow King Jonathan -- even if it means irreversibly damaging the land and killing their workers. On a mission to save both her animal friends and her human ones, Daine has to master her wild magic in order to fight for the kingdom and triumph over the would-be usurpers.

I know some on GR felt this one was slower than the first, but I think that worked in its favor. Daine is gaining powers, learning her magic. If it were rushed it would feel cheap. Daine & Numair uncover a plot that threatens not just the throne, but all of Tortall. When Daine and Numair separate, and a magic barrier soon makes that separation against their will, Daine must work with the People in ways she hasn‘t before. Will they be in time?

We get to meet the pack! And a whole host of other friends (furred, feathered, two legger, and immortal) as well as a cast of foes, but isn‘t that always the case. Likewise, Daine starts the long (though not as long for her as many others) slog of growing up.

I listened to this one quickly (2x) on audio because I knew it wouldn‘t be my favorite—I‘ve just never been into anthropomorphic animal fantasy, but I do want to continue with the series and the next one looks like it has more court politics and Daine is older, so it‘s up next! Still a pick because I think it‘s great middle grades fantasy, just not my favorite subjects.

Book 122, eyeball

Ha! Look at me reading a book with my eyeballs for a change!

Still an old favorite. It's been a solid decade since I read this series and I'm definitely seeing things differently as an adult with a daughter Diane's age. Mostly that man, teenage girls are annoying. 😂

Kidding, kidding (mostly) but it's fun watching her powers grow and seeing her getting lovingly taken down a peg by the imortals when she needs it.

Well, I am in another reading funk this month. I have done nothing for my #BookSpinBingo! Hopefully the world of Tortall will help! 💛

@EclecticBookLover My autocorrect made Tortall into Tortilla and I have been laughing to myself. The little one thinks I'm silly! 😂😂

EclecticBookLover 😆 thats a good one! 4y
LaraReads My funk feel like it has lasted a year! I finally feel like I am seeing the other side of it! 🙌 🙌 4y

I've been on a bit of a Tamora Pierce binge lately, though slightly out of order, first reading the two "Trickster" books, then going back to read the Lioness series, and now the Immortals (Daine) series. Fun, easy reads and some good high fantasy, as well!

Watching Dane‘s connection to the animals was great & it‘s obvious the gods have bigger plans for her future. I love the eco side of this series-the elevation of all to equals, the truth that humans aren‘t the be-all of the world but just an equal part of a bigger picture that often get above ourselves. The personalities of all the different characters is delightful, & the take down of Yolaine is perfect 😊

This is really a tale that continues Daine‘s abilities and wild magic, with some new characters introduced, such as Maura, Stormsong the baby dragon and the wolf pack.

There‘s some great writing in these characters and really builds on the world making this a really enjoyable fantasy novel. I really enjoyed it.

“The wolves of the Long Lake Pack, gorged on a careless mountain sheep, slept as they digested their meal. Only Brokefang, their chieftain, was awake to see the moon rise. He sat on a stone outcrop, thinking –an odd pastime for a wolf.”......my bedtime reading !

ravenlee Sounds good to me! 6y
bookcollecter How are you feeling? 6y
Lel2403 @bookcollecter honestly? Stressed and worried about the surgery Monday. Other than that fine lol..thank you for asking 💕 6y
bookcollecter @Lel2403 yes I understand completely. Pretty normal to be frightened. I will be keeping you in mind. I just sense that everything is going to come out well. 😁👍 6y

This was a bit of a let down from the first one. When is a sequel anything else, though.

Pretty sure this is the only book I own involving #Wolves (werewolves being a separate category, of course). The Immortals might be my favorite #Tortall series depending what day of the week you ask me (they're all so damn good), though this is my least favorite book from that quartet (I still love it though!! It's wonderful!!)

Cinfhen Yes, werewolves are another whole story 😜🤣❣️ 7y

PSA for all library OverDrive users: Have you started using their new app yet? It's called Libby (no idea why) and I was skeptical but I've been using it for a few months now and after a small learning curve I love it! You can do so much more in-app and I love the feed that shows me what was returned for easy reordering. We just got an email at work that said OverDrive is no longer updating the old app so now's the time to switch!

LindsayReads I tested out the beta several months ago and was underwhelmed. But that was probably just resistance to change. 🙃 Guess I gotta get used to it no matter what! 8y
LindsayReads How have you used it so far? Ebooks/audio/comics? I hope their comics layout is better... 8y
MarriedtoMrT @LindsayReads I totally understand. I was really skeptical and at first while I fumbled around I didn't like it but the more I use it the more I like it! 8y

MarriedtoMrT @LindsayReads Mostly audio which is how I really started using it because you can just stream audio instead of downloading and I was having space issues on my phone and couldn't download to OMC. 8y
MarriedtoMrT @LindsayReads I have also read books through it and unless I really want to use my paperwhite I think I'll default to Libby. I think it's nicer looking than OMC. 8y
LindsayReads Nice!! This is good info to have! Thanks! 8y
MarriedtoMrT @LindsayReads I have one comic out now. I just scrolled through and I would say it is pretty good but I never tried a comic in OMC so I can't compare. Hoopla is still better because you can't zoom in Libby. 8y
BookFreakOut Didn't know, thanks for the info! 8y
LindsayReads In OMC you could double tap to enlarge the frame kinda like Hoopla--it just wasn't as good. Is that option just gone altogether?? 8y
MarriedtoMrT @LindsayReads Just tried again. No double tap but there is an enlarge function, so kind of like Hoopla but not as organic. Instead of just initiating the zoom by touching you have to tap the zoom icon first then you can touch to enlarge but it has a small header and footer bar on the screen while you're doing it. So, more like Hoopla but still not as good. 8y
MarriedtoMrT @BookFreakOut You're welcome! I haven't seen much press about it so I thought I would help spread the word. 8y

XYZ #seasonsreadings2016 let's go back a letter - W, I have! (And not one WHAT or WHY!) And I spent awhile looking whilst the plumber tried to work out what exactly my ancient hot water service problem is...
