The Lost Man | Jane Harper
post image

My third Jane Harper in as many days and I have NO SHAME! 😅 I think the thing I love most about her books is how Australia and the Australian Outback feel like an additional character. So completely tangible! I‘m only halfway through this one, but really loving it. 🇦🇺 #52bookclub23 #abookaboutsiblings

ICantImReading I think my favorite of hers is The Survivors! I can‘t wait for her new one at the end of the month! 😀 1w
DHill One of my favorite authors! 1w

Ruthiella I agree that she so great with describing the landscape and surroundings! 👍 1w
BarbaraBB I always feel like I‘m in Australia when reading them. While I‘ve never been there 😀 1w
Cinfhen Agreed. The landscape is always a character in Harper‘s novels however…that‘s NOT really the case as much in her newest. It bothered some readers, though you know I loved the story and still felt a sense of place 1w
Cinfhen I completely forgot about The Survivors. I never got around to reading it when it came out. It‘s another standalone, right @ICantImReading ??? 1w
squirrelbrain I love that you‘re just racing through them all! ❤️ 1w
CarolynM This one is my favourite. 1w
LaraReads @ICantImReading I‘m so glad to hear this! I wasn‘t sure about it, but might have to pick it up next before Exiles! 7d
LaraReads @CarolynM yes, it is quickly moving to the top on mine! Can‘t wait to see how it ends! @DHill she‘s pretty great! I love her writing style. @squirrelbrain yes! 😅 They are definitely my new obsession! 7d
LaraReads @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB so great! And I‘ve never been either, but can imagine imagine a lot of it now. 7d
LaraReads @Cinfhen I can see her moving away/branching out a little, but I‘m sure I‘ll still feel the setting & love it anyway! 7d
ICantImReading @Cinfhen yes, another standalone! It also had an atmospheric setting - a small seaside town in Tasmania! 7d
Librarybelle Awesome! I‘ve yet to read this one! 6d
LaraReads @Librarybelle just finished it, and it was definitely my fave of hers so far. It was excellent. Even teared up a time, and did not see the ending coming! 6d
Cinfhen I just read another book, NF also set in Tasmania @ICantImReading so that setting really appeals to me!! Thanks for the recommendation 😊 6d
mcctrish I read The Dry last year ( and LOVED IT) and I believe 2023 might be the year I go down this rabbit hole 5d

I liked this one, though not quite as much as the 1st in the series. Something about the characters in this story didn‘t grab me as much as those in hometown Kiewarra in The Dry. But I‘m definitely enjoying my new obsession with Jane Harper! Can‘t wait for Exiles at the end of the month. #52bookclub23 #relatedtothewordmurder

BarbaraBB I felt the same about both books ands am looking forward to Exiles too. 1w
Cinfhen I hope the Exiles don‘t disappoint 💗 1w

squirrelbrain I think that this was my ‘least favourite‘ of her books, not that I didn‘t love it still, but the others were even better! (edited) 1w
CarolynM I'm with @squirrelbrain This one is my least favourite. I didn't think the setting was as good and I had a bit of a problem with resolution. 1w
Librarybelle Can‘t wait to read the Exiles! 1w
LaraReads @CarolynM yes! Exactly this. The setting just wasn‘t a connection for me. And I was pretty ho-hum about the ending. 1w
LaraReads @squirrelbrain agreed! I just started The Lost Man. It‘s not the same series, but I‘m liking it a lot so far! 1w

Really, really enjoyed this one! I don‘t read a whole lot of thrillers, but saw this one suggested in a #52bookclub23 group for #setinaustralia and it was a page-turner! Well, whatever an audiobook page-turner is. The characters are so interesting & the pacing is great. Quick without being confusing, even when the flashbacks are mixed it. And the author does a great job of making pretty much everyone seem like a suspect. I loved it!

LeeRHarry Glad you enjoyed it - Jane Harper always does an excellent job of creating a real sense of place too I feel 😊 1w

LaraReads @LeeRHarry yes! That‘s a really great description! 1w
LaraReads @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain this was my first Jane Harper, but I started the 2nd book this morning! 1w
LaraReads @Cinfhen I remember that book being your #lastfirst I think! Glad to hear you liked it even better! Excited to continue the series. 1w
LaraReads @KarenUK thanks! But now I‘m realizing maybe I should have used it for the #includesafuneral because I just started the 2nd book and could have used it for the Australia prompt 😂 (edited) 1w

A Man Called Ove | Fredrik Backman
post image

Date night last night to see A Man Called Otto! It was so good! I had been looking forward to it since I knew it was being made. It seemed to get almost everything from the book right! Thought Tom Hanks did ‘Ove‘ well. I watched the Swedish film a few years back as well. They were both good in their own ways. #bookintomovie

Kaylamburson So good to hear! I really want to see this. 2w
Aims42 I saw it this weekend and totally agree it matched the book 😁 Tom Hanks was great and the actress who played Marisol was perfect for the role!! I‘m glad I brought some Kleenex though, I cried at the same spots in the movie as I did reading the book 🥹 2w
LaraReads @Aims42 yes I loved Marisol too! I didn‘t quite sob as much at the end as I did with the book, but I was crying most of the movie as well! And my husband hadn‘t read the book, so he had no idea what to expect going in. He said…you might have warned me how sad it would be! 😬 2w

AmyG Good to know. I wasn‘t too sure about this one. 2w
LaraReads @Kaylamburson @AmyG yes, I wasn‘t sure after seeing the trailer either. But I don‘t think the trailer does it justice. Nothing is ever as good as the book, but I think it captures the heart of Ove pretty well. And I really loved how they incorporated the flashbacks. 2w
Kaylamburson That‘s really great! The trailer did not show any signs of sadness. My MIL saw the trailer when we were in town wanting to see it and I told her how I loved the book and she should but that it doesn‘t seem to explain what it‘s about at all. I do think the trailer is doing this a disservice. I wouldn‘t have been interested if I hadn‘t read it. @Aims42 2w
LaraReads @Kaylamburson exactly. I agree with all of that! Because when my husband saw the trailer, he was not interested, but he ended up thinking it was really good. 2w

“It was a mistake to believe that other people were not living as deeply as you were. Besides, you were not even living that deeply”
t‘s not so much that I loved this, but it is going to stay with me for some time! It is designed, I believe, to make each of us very uncomfortable. At how ridiculous we are. But also how important we are. Poking at the scab of our faults, then telling us to maybe give ourselves (& everyone else) a little slack. ⬇️

LaraReads “There is still a real life to be lived, there are still real things to be”

It made me laugh out loud so many times. Then it made me scared, and sad, and it hurt, then it gave me just a little bit of hope? I do definitely recommend giving it a read!

Shuggie and Sunshine. Finally finished this one today, out back while enjoying a few rays before we get another freeze. Most of this was on audio for me. 18 hours of dark & tragic heartbreak. While I thought it was a very good book, it was a VERY tough read. It shows how very bleak it is to love someone so much who will never, ever be able to help themselves. Even if, at times, they truly believe they are going to try. 💔#doublespin

Infinite Country: A Novel | Patricia Engel

Pickpick

“Love comes paired with failures, apologies for deficiencies. The only remedy is compassion.”

This is my favorite of 2021 so far! ⬇️

LaraReads When you put name and faces and real lives to the nameless that are often portrayed in the news, it can and will break your heart. That‘s the reason this struck me so sharply, because I know I am guilty of the numbness that comes with so many of the same stories. This novel helped to make me feel that empathy again. 2y
LaraReads To me, the disjointed feel of this story only adds to the desperation each member of this family must feel, not takes away from it. I enjoyed the journey, I enjoyed the emotion, and I am thankful for the reminder of things that need to be recognized and cared about. I especially enjoyed the flashbacks and Colombian history/Andean mythology that was presented in them. 2y
LaraReads I usually don‘t like when stories pull you out of the present, but for some reason it really worked for me here. Heritage is important, and knowing the story of someone‘s past helps you to better understand who they are. 2y
LaraReads Overall, I believe this is a story of family, and how much different life‘s paths can be when people are separated. How when you are brought back together, the pain of missing a ‘place‘ seems to lessen, and you are able to mend. You realize that love and family can become your infinite country. 2y

This is a story of destruction. The power that monsters found in this world to destroy an ancestral people, and the power that grief finds to destroy a family. Playing catch-up on some reviews for March. Finished this one on St Patrick‘s Day with our annual Irish red ale, so it seemed pretty fitting. This is the harrowing tale of life inside a Dublin maternity ward in 2018. We are smack in the midst of the Spanish flu pandemic, World War I, and the Irish Uprising. It all seemed eerily familiar and often times hit way too close to reality for our lives in 2020. It is also feels very personal to anyone ⬇️

Finished this #bookspin book tonight, and I need some time to process. It was an enjoyable, though tough to stomach, climate change-esque novel. Mehso-so

Finished this novella tonight for #booked2021 sci-fi written by a woman. It really packed a punch for such a quick read. And the audio was pretty amazing. The world building and folklore were so fantastic. I felt very connected to the MC. I was just let down a little by the lack of resolution on the science fiction parts. I very rarely read sci-fi, so it was hard for me that it was pretty open ended at the last.

Pickpick

Finishing this one up today, and decided to mix a drink in honor of Don‘s amazing bartending skills. 🤣 This book was so much fun, and an unexpected breath of fresh air. Listening while driving I found myself lol‘ing. This is why I really love reading challenges, because I don‘t know if I would have picked it up otherwise. #booked2021 #setinaustralia

Pickpick

Started reading my #doublespin book when we were at the cabin last weekend & finished listening to the audiobook tonight. Overall, even though it was a long journey, & I don‘t alway like flashbacks, I really liked it! 300 years of being forgotten every day are turned upside down & sideways by 3 little words. Even though I usually like things wrapped up in a neat little bow, I thought the ending was unique and just what this epic story deserved.
