A Shout in the Ruins
A Shout in the Ruins | Kevin Powers
5 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
Following his hugely celebrated debut novel, The Yellow Birds, Kevin Powers returns to the battlefield and its aftermath, this time in his native Virginia, just before and during the Civil War and ninety years later. The novel pinpoints with unerring emotional depth the nature of random violence, the necessity of love and compassion, and the fragility and preciousness of life. It will endure as a stunning novel about what we leave behind, what a life is worth, what is said and unsaid, and the fact that ultimately what will survive of us is love.

Good book, not something I normally read.

The best book I have read lately. The highest compliment I can offer is that the characters in this book live and breathe, and the words used to bring them to life are sheer poetry.

I hate to tease but OMG 🎧 Robert Petkoff does a great job narrating this audiobook. In print or audio put this book on your list for mid-May. A very different kind of Civil War story—lots to think about, though painful. Thanks to Hachette Audio for the review copy.
