The Legends of Khasak
The Legends of Khasak | O V Vijayan
4 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
A restlessness born of guilt and despair leads Ravi to embark on a journey that ends in the remote village of Khasak in the picturesque Palghat countryside in Kerala. A land from the past, potent with dreams and legends, enfolds the traveller in a powerful and unsettling embrace. Ravi is bewitched and entranced as everything around him—the villagers; their children whom he teaches in a makeshift school; the elders who see him as a threat; the toddy-tappers; the shamans—takes on the quality of myth. And then reality, painful and threatening, begins to intrude on the sojourner's resting place and Ravi begins to understand that there is no escape from the relentless dictates of karma... Often poetic and dark, always complex and rich, The Legends of Khasak, O.V. Vijayan's much-acclaimed first novel, translated into English by the author, is an extraordinary achievement

About halfway-through the French translation of The Legends of Khasak, based primarily on the Malayalam original, occasionally taking into account the English rewriting the author did in 1994. This is my first Malayalam novel 🌞

Story of a land ripe with folklores and myths, where fantasy, beliefs, faith and cruel reality create a potent embrace of life.
It talks of people and their inner battles, of dreams and rotten realities,of the past and the present!

The legends detail the clash that brews with the onslaught of a western rationale on the rigid cultural orthodoxy of the land.

rakeshpm The evergreen classic in Malayalam. Read the Malayalam version years ago now curiosly reading the self translated English version.Lets See how well It goes. 2y
sahana.g2 @rakeshpm I was able to enjoy the classic in English since I am not a native malayali reader. While the translation is engrossing but i felt that the original essence was lost in between, i would say the magic would most certainly be in the rustic authentic piece. 2y
rakeshpm @sahana.g2 well, at some places though even translated by the author, the translation appears to be lost. Some characters were added in the English version. The Malayalam version became a landmark in Malayalam literature when it was first published. Still this is one of the books that you want to read and re read. 2y
