In the first part, a group of travelers gathers at a castle, but they‘ve lost the ability to speak. So, they take turns telling their stories through tarot cards. These felt a bit like The Canterbury Tales, and I enjoyed them. The second part had a similar setup, but the stories included more literary references and weren‘t quite as enjoyable to me.

Daisey The author‘s note about the writing process was interesting, and the illustrated edition described seems the best way to read it.

Leniverse With Calvino I seem to always enjoy the first few pages, but then he does something relentlessly literary and slow paced where it feels like he's tossed in all the most unusual words in the thesaurus, and the effect puts me to sleep. 5d
Daisey @Leniverse Well, good to know I‘m not alone. At least I‘ll be prepared for the next one. 5d

Pickpick

4 Stars • The Castle of Crossed Destinies by Italo Calvino (published in Italian in 1973) where characters, unable to speak, use tarot cards to tell their stories. The novel explores themes of fate, chance, and storytelling through the symbolism of tarot, challenging traditional narrative structures by suggesting stories are like cards, reshuffled and reinterpreted endlessly. ⬇️

suvata Divided into two parts:
• Part One: Medieval travelers' tales, focusing on knights, quests, and magic.
• Part Two: Stories involving historical and literary figures in a more courtly setting.
