This story mostly takes place in Turkey in the 1990s and is very much a discussion of the intersection of religion and politics. I found it interesting at times and long at other times. It may have been better if I had more understanding of the historical context.

Chosen for #FoodAndLit in July but just now finished.

This book has the same cozy and heartwarming vibes as its predecessor. There‘s lots of discussion on reading and books which I loved. As a huge bibliophile, I related a lot to those parts. The book also has a strong emotional core, especially in the second half.

Andrea comes to Barcelona to live with family while attending university. Once there, she learns things are not good in her family home and she makes few friends attending class. Yet, she perseveres through a difficult year to finally find her way. The mood of much of this book is dark, but the detail in creating that mood and the hope in the end made it a light pick.

This book was a rather odd but delightful journey around Finland. I was by turns baffled by the main character Vatanen‘s choices and amused by the resulting events. Compared to much of my reading it was a generally lighter and entertaining read, although Vatanen does make some choices that get him into a some serious scrapes.

Amadis of Gaul | Garci Rodriguez De Montalvo

Mehso-so

I finished listening to Amadis of Gaul on another walk with Luthien today. There were interesting stories in here, but it was incredibly long and repetitive. Amadis is set afloat as a baby and grows up to be the best knight with a love for Oriana that is pure and strong. Yet, we make our way through four books within the book before they are able to be together. In between he fights many battles, conquers many enemies, and makes many friends.

Tamra Somebody either found or made a fascinating hole! 11mo
Daisey @Tamra Yes, we‘ve been walking this way almost every day this week and she digs a little more each day. 11mo

Daisey @kspenmoll Yes, I love beagles in general and this one especially! 💕 11mo
Daisey @Kappadeemom Thanks! 11mo
Daisey 🎧 One comment on the audio: I‘m so grateful for the LibriVox audio, as I don‘t know that I would have ever made the effort to get through this in print, but it is multiple different narrators for different chapters which doesn‘t make for the smoothest listening experience. 11mo

No One Writes to the Colonel | Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Mehso-so

I‘ve had this novella on my TBR all year and finally got around to reading it this evening. It‘s a sad story of stubborn determination, and it doesn‘t have the magical realism of the other Gabriel Garcia Marquez stories I‘ve read. With this one, I‘ve finished all of his books on the #1001books list.

I finished listening to this a few days ago. Although I really enjoyed it at the beginning, it was becoming difficult for me to stay focused and I was no longer enjoying it as much as expected, so I decided to push through to the end for now. I moved on from this to listening to Amadis of Gaul which I hope will give me a greater appreciation for it so that I can revisit it again sometime in the future.

I spent a good part of today listening to this murder mystery set in Sweden while working around the house. It‘s the first book of the Wallander series and I can see myself picking up another sometime, although I know I will never make my way through all of them. It is a great winter listen if you want something bleakly realistic rather than cozy.

I thoroughly enjoyed this travelogue describing a Norwegian journalist‘s travels through #Turkmenistan, #Kazakhstan, #Tajikistan, #Kyrgyzstan, and #Uzbekistan. She describes some of the travel itself, basic history, political aspects, culture, and personal stories of people she met.

Daisey @julieclair This book has been on my TBR since I saw it posted for #ReadingAsia2021 for the same reason, but I just fairly recently found the audio and finally got to it. Definitely a worthwhile read! 13mo

jlhammar Definitely want to get to this someday as I thought Fatland's The Border was fantastic! 13mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB @jlhammar I‘ll definitely need to add her other books to my someday list. 13mo
BarbaraBB I did too. Unfortunately that day hasn‘t come yet for me 😊 but I still want to read her! 13mo

At just under 150 pages, this book was short but still so powerful!

The book is separated into 2 parts. The first part focuses on the main character, Takako, and her life working at the bookshop, which I found very charming and cute. If you‘re a bookworm and a bibliophile, this part will definitely resonate with you!
