Orwell on Truth
Orwell on Truth | George Orwell
4 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
Over the course of his career, George Orwell wrote about many things, but no matter what he wrote the goal was to get at the fundamental truths of the world. He had no place for dissemblers, liars, conmen, or frauds, and he made his feelings well-known. In Orwell on Truth, excerpts from across Orwells career show how his writing and worldview developed over the decades, profoundly shaped by his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, and further by World War II and the rise of totalitarian states. In a world that seems increasingly like one of Orwells dystopias, a willingness to speak truth to power is more important than ever. With Orwell on Truth, readers get a collection of both powerful quotes and the context for them.

When you‘ve about had a bellyful of the “truthiness” out there(I know I have ) this book provides some relief.Made up of essays & selections from 1984 & Animal Farm, it is all relevant today.Christopher Hitchens said of him “Orwell personally encountered the 3 great malevolent movements of the 20th century-European Imperialism, fascism,& communism & took the right stand on all 3.”Highly recommended.

A nice pocket-book sized collection of excerpts from Orwell‘s essays and fiction. A good introduction to Orwell if you‘re not ready to jump into his complete works.

It is eerie to see how many of Orwell's arguments and observations about lies, propaganda and authoritarism as well as the weak side of Western style democracy are relevant to the present moment.
