Wow! I really felt seen by O‘Rourke‘s memoir about living with chronic illness. She shares her own struggles to be believed, diagnosed and treated. Alongside her compelling narrative is a general look at how medicine has largely ignored lingering conditions that disproportionately impact women. This should be required reading for healthcare professionals!

kspenmoll I love her writing & so want to read this! 1d

I finally read a novel! This was a fast-paced, violent French noir novel from the early 1970s. I wanted a different ending but it was a good book to read when filled with rage.

I loved this book! ❤️ Miller hits the perfect note between biography, literary criticism, personal essay and poetry. Every chapter/essay begins with Keats‘ poems. It was a delight to be reintroduced to his genius in such a refreshing manner. This is a charming book!

Restless Books did it again by bringing an excellent story to English readers! Sinay weaves his own family history into the events of Argentina‘s first Jewish settlement. Yes, there‘s true crime, but what really intrigued me was the detective work Sinay was required to do to bring this story to life in the wake of wrecked archives and fading memories. The result is an outstanding achievement in humanist literature.

I finished this history a few weeks ago. Timothy Snyder is the penultimate historian of 20th century Eastern Europe. I was seeking clarification on the complicated relationships between Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany. And this book certainly added depth to my understanding of how the roots of the past can grow into today‘s conflicts. It was difficult to hear all the gruesome, cruel ways people used to kill each other not long ago.

Superb creative non-fiction book about 4 Chilean murderesses! An outstanding addition to feminist and South American literature, Trabucco Zerán blends true crime, philosophical essay, and research diary. I waited what seemed like forever for this book to come out from an indie press and gobbled it up! This is a MUST-READ!!!

Erika Krouse crafted a compelling memoir that is part professional and part personal. She weaves her work as a PI with a landmark Title IX civil case with her own history of sexual violence. The result is a gripping read. #botm Triggering for sexual abuse. ⚠️

I really loved this book! Steinbeck writes with such an effortless style that makes his books a pleasure to read. Here he travels with a famed war photographer across the USSR in 1948 to chronicle the lives of ordinary people on the other side of the iron curtain. A true masterpiece of humanist literature!

Excellent (audio)book about the clash between Hitler and modern art. There‘s also a parallel narrative about the extermination of Germany‘s asylum population as part of the Nazi final solution. This is a fascinating book.

This audiobook was so engaging that it kept me awake rather than helping me fall asleep! There are long passages from several Dostoevsky works quoted with great liveliness by the narrator. I appreciated the author‘s scholarship. Quotes from unused drafts will add depth to my reading of Crime and Punishment.

⭐️ This is my favorite read so far this year! ⭐️ I highly recommend this for buddy reads and book clubs because there‘s something for everyone here! Part history of the slave trade, Civil War, reconstruction, Jim Crow; part true crime, sunken treasure search! There‘s even environmental justice & political intrigue. I loved the author‘s sensitivity and commitment to bringing the truth of this unique story to light. More people need to read this!

This book is probably already on every CRT banned list. I found it an interesting look at how history is studied, constructed, and told. It‘s also a story of how history can be lost and destroyed by dominant cultures. I like graphic non-fiction because it has so much freedom to breathe life into forgotten (and suppressed) narratives.

A must-read for students of history! I listened to the audio version which is just fine if you are okay with not remembering everyone‘s name. I‘m okay with taking away the big picture and pivotal historic points. Overall, it‘s a great companion to understanding modern cultural conflicts (ahem, Crimea). On a personal note, I love the Ottomans for establishing coffee drinking for the rest of the world! ☕️

It took me longer than expected to read this memoir. The first half is a powerful Holocaust survivor story, but it abruptly changes to a tale of a lonely American 1950s housewife. The second half of the book becomes more interesting as the author studies psychology and begins clinical practice. Dr. Ever is a truly inspiring human being! #botm 💃

Magritte: A Life | Alexander Danchev
post image

Magritte was kind of a rascal and a boring person. He‘s a thinking person‘s painter. I had to do a lot of google image searches to see the paintings while listening to the audiobook. I also didn‘t enjoy the narrator‘s voice which detracted from the biography. My favorite part was the chapter about Magritte‘s “Life Line” lecture from 1938 in which he denounced Nazism and fascism. His art isn‘t political, but repression is the enemy of imagination.

TrishB Gary Numan copied heavily from one of his pictures for the cover of his Pleasure Principle album 😁 4mo

This work by Orwell is billed as fiction but it reads like a personal account of narrative non-fiction about the experiences of impecunious men in the 1930s. It‘s certainly an important social document about poverty (and the basics haven‘t changed nearly a century later). The flaws are typical of the time: mild sexism & anti-semitism. No one (not even Dickens) portrays the humanity in society‘s outcasts better than Orwell! A true master! Loved it!

Moller follows classical works by Euclid, Ptolomy, and Galen as they are lost with the fall of the Roman Empire. Various scholars from Baghdad to Venice recover, translate, and disseminate these works throughout the Dark Ages. It‘s an interesting read, but it helps to be familiar with medieval history. I‘m grateful that I had previously read books about the Crusades, classical antiquity, and the Normans. 📜
