Two in the Far North
Two in the Far North | Margaret E Murie
5 posts | 2 read | 12 to read
This enduring story of life, adventure, and love in Alaska was written by a woman who embraced the remote Alaskan wilderness and became one of its strongest advocates. In this moving testimonial to the preservation of the Arctic wilderness, Mardy Murie writes from her heart about growing up in Fairbanks, becoming the first woman graduate of the University of Alaska, and marrying noted biologist Olaus J. Murie. So begins her lifelong journey in Alaska and on to Jackson Hole, Wyoming where along with her husband and others, they founded The Wilderness Society. Mardy's work as one of the earliest female voices for the wilderness movement earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

1️⃣ Here we go! From Minnesota. Top right photo was taken this September! Bottom left taken in record snow year 2019. Bottom right is some Trumpeter swans on the Mississippi by my house.
2️⃣ I‘ve been on Litsy almost four years. I love to read quotes from and reviews of books I haven‘t read yet. It‘s cool that there is a social media platform exclusive to books!

Margaret Murie helped establish The Wilderness Society and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and received numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998 by President Clinton. This is about her adventures in Alaska throughout her life, beginning as a nine-year old in 1911 and ending with her last visit 1975, in her 73rd year! Her stories are told though a series of highly detailed monologues and diary entries.

I‘ve noticed this at work, too. Some of us just can‘t shut up about our dogs.

Ruthiella Cat people are the same! 😀 4y
BestDogDad @Ruthiella Yes! We were cat people before we “switched” to dogs. I miss having cats around. 3y

A classic tale of Alaskan frontier life, with some of the greatest champions of the wilderness, Mardy and Olaus Murie. Margaret Murie is fearless and this is her account of her travels with her biologist husband as he tracks the caribou and other species.
