The Repentant Rake
The Repentant Rake | Edward Marston
3 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
London is a veritable cesspool ... A swamp of corruption and crime' When Sir Julius Cheever's son, a notorious rake, goes missing, and a blackmailer begins terrorising London's most dissolute fops, it seems plausible that the two events are connected. Divided by politics but united in a desire to see justice done, Christopher Redmayne and Jonathan Bale must combine forces once again. But how can they hope to find those who exploit the scandal of others, when the victims themselves will do anything to maintain their anonymity? And what of Sir Julius's son? Most feel he must have been the victim of his own, debauched appetites, but a few talk of his repentance. So where is the repentant rake? And, with only lies, rumours and gossip to work with, can Redmayne and Bale ever hope to find him?

Murder, blackmail, violence and romance, all will be found in this book. We all know that towards the end of a good book we tend to read faster to get to the climax of a great novel. With this book you get that feeling as you approach the end of most chapters, such is the excitement and desire to know what occurs next. It is one of those books that satisfies all of your desires in a literary sense. Very enjoyable as were the two preceeding books.

Another excellent book in the Christopher Redmayne Series by Edward Marston. The combination, and differences, between Christopher Redmayne and Jonathan Bale make the series, along with their strange friendship. A few good twists in the book among the decadence of the time in the period following the Great Fire Of London. If you enjoy historical mysteries set in this time frame I would recommend them, and they do make for light easy reading.

julesG I just misread all those names. There was Redmayne closely followed by Edward - you know what my brain did with this: Eddy Redmayne wrote a book??? 😱 6y
Andrew65 @julesG 😂😂😂 I wonder what type of book that would be? 6y

Starting the third book in the Christopher Redmayne Series by Edward Marston which is set in the second half of the 17th Century. These are light entertaining reads about the joining up of an architect (Christopher Redmayne) and Jonathan Bale, a Puritan constable, to solve Crimes. I do enjoy these.

CMB This sounds perfect for me, a history major...and wanna-be sleuth 🕵🏻‍♀️ 😂 6y
Andrew65 @CMB A good combination, I‘d also recommend his Railway Detective Series. 6y
jillrhudy Sounds awesome even if I prefer my rakes unrepentant. 6y
