"The only thing more fun than a bonkers space battle is a whole book packed with bonkers space battles. Come for the exploding spaceships, stay for the intriguing universe."--Becky Chambers, author of A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet Jane Kamali is an agent for the Justified. Her mission: to recruit children with miraculous gifts in the hope that they might prevent the Pulse from once again sending countless worlds back to the dark ages. Hot on her trail is the Pax--a collection of fascist zealots who believe they are the rightful rulers of the galaxy and who remain untouched by the Pulse. Now Jane, a handful of comrades from her past, and a telekinetic girl called Esa must fight their way through a galaxy full of dangerous conflicts, remnants of ancient technology, and other hidden dangers. Think big guns, smugglers, and epic space battles. And that's just the beginning . . . At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

'Is that some kind of terrible proverb?'

That's the problem with teenagers: they already *think* they're the center of the universe. When they find out they might actually *be* incredibly important, they can react in unpredictable ways.

This was the problem with shepherding children; they were all will and movement.

There‘s lots to recommend this book. The relationships were fascinating and well crafted. There were touches that made sense and were also far enough outside of my experience as to feel alien, like Jane calling everyone she didn‘t know the gender of “she”. The dialogue was good. The pulse, the over arching threat in the universe, made no sense. Maybe it‘s explored more in a later book?

This one ended up feeling uneven to me. I liked the beginning, a lot. I enjoyed seeing the characters come together, but their meeting never quite payed off, emotionally speaking. Instead, a good 3/4 of the book is action sequences in which literally faceless foes are mowed down, with some witty one liners thrown in. This wore quite thin after a while. A blockbuster in book form, the humanity needs to shine through more for me to really care.

We‘re enjoying this sci-fi novel with flavors of Firefly, The Expanse and The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. #catsoflitsy

This book was a lot of fun. It has nonstop action and really good characterization. It made me laugh a bunch and kept my interest throughout. I‘m very excited for the sequel, which is due in May.

My current #library stack - I don‘t have a problem, I swear.

BookFreakOut I'm with you there, I legitimately thought they had a server issue when it didn't show I had placed any holds because I usually have... several....going, but I'd actually gotten them all! 5y

Wow! This was spectacular! I won this ARC through Goodreads a month ago and it was such a fun read! What I really enjoyed is that a majority of the main cast is female, which is so important in an often male-dominated genre. This book also features edge of your seat space and terrain battles (the battle with the Reints....so, so good), great world building, and intelligent and witty AI. I loved that each of the ships had their own personality!

Apparently I won an ARC through Goodreads that I don‘t remember entering for! I‘ve been in the mood for SciFi so I can read this next!
