Stolen Lies | K Webster, Nikki Ash
post image

I started reading my ARC copy of Stolen Lies. It is sequel to Hidden Truts which I posted a few days ago.
I was shock already at the beginning. 😯 It is really good suspense romance.

It's almost 2:30am, not quite 3am yet, but this mostly applies to me tonight. I have tomorrow off and I haven't had much time for reading this week, so I'm up late catching up.

I'm completely on the Baby Yoda is the most adorable thing in the world train.

Mehso-so

Viv's 52, in the midst of menopause, mother of two children (20ish + 7 y/o), working as a PA in a pellet factory, when she finds out that her husband has an affair with a colleague from work. They try to save their marriage but eventually he leaves her. Now Viv has to pick up the shards of her life. She does so quite well, but the story presentation is dull and convoluted. I skim-read the second half of the #ARC.

TheAromaofBooks I feel like this is now the plot of every book. I'm not sure why every journey of self-discovery for middle-aged women has to start with a cheating husband... 3d
jb72 @TheAromaofBooks Exactly! A woman of any age can go on self discovery and it does NOT have to be because of a man or his actions. 3d
TheAromaofBooks I understand that authors are trying to have a catalyst, but this constant barrage of “no marriage lasts forever because literally every single man on the planet is a cheating bastard and actually you are better off without him anyway“ kind of gets old to me. There are plenty of catalysts! In my personal life, one day I was sitting at my desk & realized I hated my job & my husband fully supported my decision to try something new! /end rant🙄 @jb72 3d
jb72 @TheAromaofBooks I agree. Many men are fully supportive and loving in their relationships. Lately it seems there is nonstop man bashing. 3d

Conjure Women: A Novel | Afia Atakora

I took a long time with this one because it was so well done and I didn't want to rush through it. It's an impressive debut - Atakora gets the cadence and the tone of Southern speech absolutely right, without ever slipping into horribly written dialect, which was a relief. I received an ARC to review, but honestly, I loved this book. Review here:

Mehso-so

I had a lot of feelings about this book, which seems intentional. The author states in the novel that it is a cautionary tale, and it reads in some ways in the ways that cautionary tales from childhood read. Clear definitions of right and wrong, outsized bad guys, and that horrible, sinking pit in your stomach at the hint of climax for the book. These characteristics could work really well for some readers, but to me, it didn't.

I really enjoyed this book! It was an interesting weaving of unlikely characters as they come together to preserve history in the sleepy little village of Chawton immediately following the Second World War. They all have their own trauma to work through and are avid readers, especially of Austen, which brings them together. Definitely recommend! #arc #thejaneaustensociety #may2020

Hidden Truths was amazing and so much more than I expected. It was so twisty and keep me wanting more. I couldn‘t put it down.
I need answers so can‘t wait for the second part.
Highly recommend it!

4/5
Enchanting, quiet and moving, this fable-like novel is about the last two humans on earth. While the premise is bleak, the story is driven by beautiful descriptions of nature and magic realism that leaves you with a sense of hope and comfort.
