Soft pick for me. It was a long book that meanders along. Mystery, Historical and Drama all in one book.

Published July 2, 2024

Was my #DoubleBookSpin Book for July

Thank goodness you #Knoph and #NetGalley for providing this #ARC Advance Reading Copy. Expected publication date is November 19, 2024.

5 Stars • This is Murakami‘s first novel in six years. In "The City and Its Uncertain Walls," Haruki Murakami weaves a complex tale of a walled city inhabited by a young man and a girl. The city is guarded by a giant and populated by golden-haired beasts. ⬇️

suvata The girl works in a library collecting old dreams, and the man must enter the city to become a dream reader to find his true self. The story explores themes of separation of body and consciousness, reality and fantasy, and the power of literature. 1d

15 years after Jeremy & Rafe are found after disappearing in the woods of West Virginia for 6 months, Emilie comes seeking help for her kidnapped sister in those same woods.

This was a love letter to portal fantasies, & I adored it! The world building was really interesting, we get a sweet romance, & I loved every character we met! The pacing was a little wonky with the Storyteller‘s Interludes, but other than that, I loved this story! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

The Palace of Eros: A Novel | Caro De Robertis

I was really excited to read a queer retelling of the Eros and Psyche myth. I was disappointed.

I could not stand the writing style. Lyrical writing can be poetic, this was bloated with unnecessary similes and metaphors. The words start to lose meaning.

⬇️

PuddleJumper The dense prose distracts from the utter lack of plot or real character depth.

The author made the baffling decision to have Psyche‘s chapters in first person and Eros‘ in third person. Eros was the more interesting character, first person would have given more insight into the character.

Thanks to #Netgalley for the #ARC

Oh I love it when I get accepted for #ARC that I don't remember requested ...

I've got a bit of a backlog. I got distracted by Kindle Unlimited. I might have to shift a bunch of them to next month and focus on the stuff from #Netgalley

Can you tell I absolutely adore this author?

I‘m ecstatic NetGalley granted me a copy of The Examiner, which is not due out until September.

I started it last night, stayed up way too late, am about 60% in, and can‘t wait to get back to it.

Oh, and I also preordered it today during BN‘s preorder sale. #netgalley #arc

Monica5 I have never read her. What genre does she write? 5d
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage @Monica5 She writes mystery and it‘s very unique - all emails and chat messages. 5d
Monica5 @Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I love mysteries. I will have to give her a try. Do you have a book I should start with, or can I just start with any of them? 1d
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage @Monica5 The Appeal is more cozy - about a small group of theater people in England, and The Christmas Appeal is a follow up to it, a Christmas novella. You could start there - Appeal was her first. Then Twyford Code, which I also love, and includes translated audio files. The Alperton Angels is a little more intense, but I love that one too. 12h

I give up. Took me 11 days to get to 48%. The book is supposed to have 352pp, but I'm certain I've read more than 600pp already. I liked the GN, but I'm no fan of all the tangents, different POVs and endless dialogue (just an example, more than half a page of talking about how reinforced a particular door is - on my Kindle, with the font size setting on the smallest font possible).

This might be a good novel, but I don't have the patience.

2.5⭐

Blood and Mascara is a Noir Mystery Thriller. I'm struggling to write this review. There were parts that I loved about this book, but there's others I didn't like so much. It took me 3 days to read it and that because the last 75% of the book was good and I couldn't wait to see what happened.

The character development was good. I was glad to see how Bronze had developed and changed by the end of the book. ⬇️

Monica5 The plot and premise of the book was excellent. All these factors I liked about the book.

What turned me off of the book was some of the writing. It was disjointed in a way. The book would be moving along and then all of the sudden something out of left field would be put in. I honestly got confused during those times. It seemed to me that there were a lot of those in the book. One chapter in particular to me should have been in the first half of the book, instead just thrown into the last 15%. It was completely out of place for me.

Tentative Publishing Date: July 9, 2024

Thanks to Netgalley, Pulplit, and Karnin for the E-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

One print book, one audiobook (#AuthorAMonth #AAM), and one ebook (#CampNetGalley #NetGalley #ARC)! I think I'm officially back to reading, after six months of barely reading at all. 😊📚
