Devil House | JOHN. DARNIELLE

Yaaaaaasssss! I loved the author‘s previous novels and Devil House has solidified him as an autobuy for me. This extremely meta novel is satisfying all the way thru, but the ending 🤯 and took this from a campy take on the 198o‘s satanic panic to a strong social commentary. #Netgalley #ARC

Well-ReadNeck PS: this awesome candle pic from the publisher. One of the best book swag things I‘ve seen 😀 7h

The best kind of What the Fu**kery

Looking back on this it is a much deeper book than it appeared on first reading, there is a distinct feminist message along with a cast of fully diverse characters including representatives with physical and psychology conditions who tend to be under represented in fiction.

This book is magnificent. It's my first time with this author and it makes me want to go back and read the others. The author imagines the lives of the daughters of the first Chinese woman to set foot in the US. And the epigenetic footprint of ancestral trauma.

I really like Emily Henry‘s books. This #ARC is awkward to read on my iPad because I can‘t adjust the font size so I‘m having to pinch it out and back in again, BUT — that‘s a small price to pay to read this goodie. ⭐️📚

This dystopian novel reminded me of the MaddAddam series, only I feel Atwood did it better.

I might have to revisit this in the future though because the writing was complex and beautifully done I just couldn't stop comparing it to other books while reading it.

Nearly a year after reading this book for the first time (I got an ARC), I am still affected 😍🔥

Pirates, treasure, fae…there‘s much to love within these sea conquering pages!

We have a mystery that Willberg manages to twist until the end. There's still chemistry between Marion Lane and her co-Inquirers. There's a mole in Mrs Brikett's underground chambers.

Unfortunately, it could not hold my attention and I forced myself to read it. Furthermore, I was annoyed by very avoidable mistakes right from the first page on.

Very claustrophobic book.

Sarah Wolfe is one of the pharmacists in the bunker. People are sheltering because of radioactive fallout. They live in very close quarters and have limited resources, except for the leaders who live in comparative splendour. Most of the plot unravels slowly, just like the inhabitants' sanity.

A pretty messed up female narrator, lots of literati references, hints at potentially dark directions for the plot.

Just the worst cover. I was told the inspiration was reversing the male gaze of a book cover like Lolita, but it really lands at “dated romance,” which isn‘t necessarily the same reader #ARC

akaGingerK Despite the initial Taddeo‘s-Animal pull of the compellingly awful main character, this book ultimately shies away from the darker outcomes, but also didn‘t give the catharsis of ‘getting away with it.‘ I became invested, but I don‘t feel like it quite stuck the landing. 3d
