pickI have read this book to my daughter a thousand times. And we both still love it. The illustrations are so detailed (and distinctively British) and we love playing "spot the..." games.
As an adult I find the words deeply poignant - the first time I read it I got all choked up. I believe that it's based on Allan Ahlberg's last memories of his father before he left to fight in WW2. He never came home.
Bookwomble The Ahlberg are fantastic children's authors. Our kids loved the Jolly Postman books when they were little. 6y

andrew61 I loved it as well and must have read it hundreds of times over the years - i don't think i could sit a 23/19/or 16 year old to read it again but sorely tempted. 6y

Centique Oh my goodness, this brings back ALL the memories. This is the book I read the most to my daughter (who is now 13!) There‘s so much to look at in these illustrations. I love it to bits. Must make sure our copy is in the memory box! (edited) 6y
