#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In his final hours in office, the outgoing President grants a controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems that Backman, in his heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the world's most sophisticated satellite surveillance system. Backman is quietly smuggled out of the country in a military cargo plane, given a new name, a new identity, and a new home in Italy. Eventually, after he has settled into his new life, the CIA will leak his whereabouts to the Israelis, the Russians, the Chinese, and the Saudis. Then the CIA will do what it does best: sit back and watch. The question is not whether Backman will survive--there is no chance of that. The question the CIA needs answered is, Who will kill him?

Finally finished. Been busy this month. Not your usual John Grisham book. More espionage thriller.
Didn't really care for it, but gave it 3⭐ because of the last 75%.

Unlike most of John Grisham's novels, this didn't keep me on the edge

I‘m not sure what happened here, if I‘ve changed as a reader, if Grisham started to write different books or a mix of both.

We follow Joel Backman from he‘s pardoned from his prison sentence and starts a new life in Italy. So he‘s not your typical hero, but more of a anti-hero. To me he just seems like a mean to tell a story, and he‘s not fully fleshed out and as a result I don‘t care what happens to him.

AnneCecilie There‘s a huge buildup to a climax that to me never takes off, and then the book ended. I feel a little bit cheated. This was my third book finished for #MakeMeReadIt @TheReadingMermaid 6y
