A story about death and grief that is tender, but honest, brutal, but silly, sparse, and yet, so full. The art is stark in its subtlety, focusing in on the duck (who says everything with her eyes), and death (with a tulip behind his back). Read this to your kids, or to your friends, or to yourself-- remember that taking care of and having fun with each other is life, and that, in the end, death is life too.

“‘Are you cold?‘ Duck asked. ‘Shall I warm you a little?‘ Nobody had ever offered to do that for Death.” I was just going through my GoodReads WTR list and sorted it by page length. I am so glad I stumbled upon this adorable little story. Death isn‘t a malevolent entity. It‘s just there. Sometimes when we‘re ready, more often when we‘re not. It‘s a part of life, however. These illustrations beg to be decorations.

This is a stunningly put together little book. Poignant and deep, but gently so - likely a wonderful way to broach a difficult topic with a child, and lovely to read as an adult.
