The Gamble
The Gamble | Joan Wolf
1 post | 1 read
Georgiana Newbury’s father was a blackmailer, though she only learned this on his death. In an effort to provide for her handicapped sister, she attempts one extortion of her own—for the elderly Earl of Winterdale to present her to society to find a husband. But the earl is dead and the title has passed to his nephew, who, for reasons of his own, agrees to Georgie’s demands. From Library Journal ... The knowledge that her late father, Lord Weldon, had been a blackmailer was shocking enough, but when Georgiana Newbury actually follows in his footsteps, if only briefly, and tries to "convince" one of her father's victims, the elderly Earl of Winterdale, to present her to society in an effort to find a suitable husband, even she is surprised. However, the earldom has changed hands, and when the present earl, young, arrogant, and not at all what Georgiana had expected, suddenly agrees to her plan, she begins to question her decision. In this fast-paced, highly readable Regency historical, a bold, bright heroine who takes her family responsibilities seriously faces off with a handsome, calculating hero with a purpose of his own; the novel deftly depicts the flash and glitter of the season and will please Wolf's many fans.

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this book because it‘s so real. It deals with real dilemmas and solutions. None of the love at first sight fairytale stuff. It had a few slow spots but overall a refreshing read.
