The Sorrows of an American
The Sorrows of an American | Siri Hustvedt
5 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
After their father's funeral, Erik and Inga Davidsen find a cryptic letter from an unknown woman among his papers, dating from his adolescence in rural Minnesota during the Depression. Returning to his psychiatric practice in New York, Erik sets about reading his father's memoir, hoping to discover the man he never fully understood. At the same time, another woman enters Erik's lonely, divorced life - a beautiful Jamaican who moves into his garden flat with her small daughter. As Erik gets drawn into the cat-and-mouse tactics of someone who appears to be stalking her, he finds out that his sister Inga is also being threatened, by a journalist in possession of a wounding secret from her past. A multi-layered novel that probes the mysteries of the heart and mind, THE SORROWS OF AN AMERICAN is compulsive, thought-provoking and profoundly affecting.

I can‘t even express how much I ❤️ Siri Hustvedt‘s writing. I don‘t read her books often (I hoard them for ‘special‘ reading... anyone else do this, or am I a weirdo?) but when I get into them, I‘m always enlightened. I ❤️ how ideas & philosophy are interwoven in the dialogue and for me, these always seem to be right time, right place. Some might find this (& the name drops) a little pretentious, but I feel like it‘s just expanding my TBR list. ⬇️

Bookish.SAM Goya always seems to make an appearance, which I now look forward to 😜. (edited) 4y

#QuotsyJan19 Day 17: What does it mean, really, to be reasonably #healthy? Haven‘t read this book yet but sounds interesting.

I tried another Hustvedt because I loved her What I Loved. However, this one couldn't live up to my expectations.

Thank you @RealLifeReading for this fun foto prompt! It was fun to look over my books with #dressesoncovers in mind. I'm surprised I didn't find many suitable covers - except this cool dress on a cover for a book by the amazing Siri Hustvedt.
And just for fun - another cover entirely lacking a dress 😉
