Mehso-so

I had high hopes for this book after reading a few pages and almost bought myself a paperback copy before finding it on Hoopla. After listening to the audiobook version, I came away feeling unimpressed though not altogether disappointed. There were a few insightful chapters that I really enjoyed, but overall it felt disjointed and run-through with stories to which I could not relate. Not quite memoir or self-help, this book did not inspire me.

I read the first few pages of this book on Amazon and it really sounded great, but now that I'm listening to the audiobook I'm just not captivated. This is the first audiobook I've listened to in years. I never did like them before, but since I've been loving podcasts lately I thought I would give it another go.

What are your thoughts on audiobooks versus paper copies? Do you find that your opinion of the book differs based on the format?

Rebesta I‘ve only listened to one or two audio books. My mind tends to wander when I‘m listening rather than reading, so the experience didn‘t go well for me. I prefer the printed word over the spoken. 6y
Shae_Purcell @Rebesta I think that may be my problem too. My mind wanders and I keep having to skip back a few seconds to see what I missed. I don't have trouble with this when I listen to podcasts though so I'm not sure why I would with an audiobook. I do just really enjoy having a printed book in my hands though. Thanks for sharing your perspective! 6y
TheBookAddict I love audiobooks! They make reading easy when I have other stuff to do. But some narrators don‘t do it for me. I think that there are some books that are better in audiobook format. I started reading Sleeping Giants and had to switch to audiobook because the print wasn‘t doing it for me since it‘s written in the form of articles and interview transcripts. (edited) 6y

Shae_Purcell @TheBookAddict That's a really good point! Maybe it's just the narrator that isn't keeping my attention, not the material itself. I have a long drive to work and back each day so podcasts are perfect and I was hoping audiobooks would be great too, especially since my library uses Hoopla now. I'll keep trying different ones to see if I find others I might love. Thank you! 6y
Rebesta @spharo - It happens when I listen to anything spoken and recorded. I can‘t even listen to the news. 🤪 6y
TheBookAddict @spharo you‘re welcome! I hope you find some that you like. Some of my favorite narrators are R.C. Bray, Neil Gaiman, Christina Moore, Kate Mulgrew, and Eileen Stevens to name a few, maybe that‘ll help. I love Hoopla as well! 6y
Shae_Purcell @Rebesta Hmm, I enjoy listening to the news and different podcasts so I'm thinking @TheBookAddict may be on to something. Although I do love most of all being able to hold (and smell!) the actual book in my hands, podcasts are super convenient for the long drive. 6y
Shae_Purcell @TheBookAddict Oh thank you for sharing some of your favorites! I will look them up today to see if ai can find a few I might like to try next. I've always wanted to read Neil Gaiman's books so I may start there! 6y
TheBookAddict @spharo you‘re welcome. They have quite a few of Gaiman‘s books on hoopla. I also prefer print books the best. 6y
