The Million | Karl Schroeder
3 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Futurist Karl Schroeder imagines infiltrating the elite of a marginal society in The Million Every thirty years, ten billion visitors overrun Earth during one month of madness: partying, polluting, and brawling. In between, the world is ruled by the Million; the inheritors and custodians of all of humanity’s wealth and history, they lead unimaginable lives of privilege and wealth, and they see it as their due. Gavin Penn-of-Chaffee is an illegal child—a visitor hidden among the Million. When the family that raised him in secret is torn apart, Gavin must impersonate a dead boy to survive. What he doesn’t know is that his new identity is expected at the School of Auditors—the Million’s feared police force, sworn to find and capture outcasts like him to keep the peace. In order to solve the murder of his adoptive father, Gavin must keep his disguise and his wits intact within the stronghold of those threatened by his very existence. This was a nice return to the universe of his previous Lockstep novel. It's a fast read, but probably makes more sense if you've actually read Lockstep first. There's not enough detail in the short novella to really inform the reader how the lockstep concept works. So, not the best work as a stand alone book.

There is the rare hard sci-fi that I‘m able to get into, this wasn‘t one of them. It‘s well written and a fast read but it didn‘t really pull me in.

The Million was a really quick read that seemed to be promising, but sort of burned up before it got anywhere. I would certainly enjoy seeing sequels and finding out more about this world though! Full review: http://bit.ly/2NfdzIR

speljamr For a more in depth dive into this world I recommend reading his novel Lockstep. 6y
avalinah @speljamr thanks, that's cool - I didn't know that existed. Very interesting. 6y
speljamr @avalinah Yeah, this novella didn't work well as a stand alone. I understood a lot about it simply because I had read the previous novel, so it made sense for me and was a welcome return to this setting. Not a good book for an introduction to Karl Schroeder. 6y
avalinah @speljamr it's interesting that they decided to market it without even mentioning the first one. Might be that it's a different publisher, though. 6y
