The Mapmakers' Race
The Mapmakers' Race | Eirlys Hunter
1 post | 2 read | 3 to read
Five children find a route through the wilderness in this exciting mountain-race adventure for middle grade readers. Sal, Joe, Francie and Humphrey misplace their famous mapmaker mother as they begin the Great Race to map a rail route through an uncharted wilderness. Their father didn't return from his last expedition and now their money is gone. This race is their last chance. They have 28 days to find and map the best route. There'll be bears, bees, bats, river crossings, cliff falls, impossible weather—but worst of all, they're racing five teams of adults who do not play by the rules.

I bought this book as a gift but then I decided to quality check it. And it‘s glorious! Dad‘s a famous explorer who has been lost for some time, Mum and kids plan to enter a map making contest to chart the way for a new railway (because they are in desperate need for the prize money) but get separated. Kids go on ahead. They work together to survive the wildness & have an unforgettable time complete with unscrupulous rivals and unexpected dangers.

Jennn56 That‘s a beautiful book 5y
Bibliogeekery Gorgeous! What age is it appropriate for? 5y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Bibliogeekery, depends on the reader and if you were reading together or solo - but 8-12? Nothing too scary happens (or is at least if it does is resolved fairly quickly) 5y
