Something Borrowed, Something Blood-Soaked
Something Borrowed, Something Blood-Soaked | Christa Carmen
6 posts | 4 read | 14 to read
A young woman's fears regarding the gruesome photos appearing on her cell phone prove justified in a ghastly and unexpected way. A chainsaw-wielding Evil Dead fan defends herself against a trio of undead intruders. A bride-to-be comes to wish that the door between the physical and spiritual worlds had stayed shut on All Hallows' Eve. A lone passenger on a midnight train finds that the engineer has rerouted them toward a past she'd prefer to forget. A mother abandons a life she no longer recognizes as her own to walk up a mysterious staircase in the woods. In her debut collection, Christa Carmen combines horror, charm, humor, and social critique to shape thirteen haunting, harrowing narratives of women struggling with both otherworldly and real-world problems. From grief, substance abuse, and mental health disorders, to a post-apocalyptic exodus, a seemingly sinister babysitter with unusual motivations, and a group of pesky ex-boyfriends who won't stay dead, Something Borrowed, Something Blood-Soaked is a compelling exploration of horrors both supernatural and psychological, and an undeniable affirmation of Carmen's flair for short fiction.

This short story is the last one in this collection and it‘s beautiful. We meet Willow who is in a psych ward. She‘s suicidal only because since the death of her parents she keeps seeing this horrible shadow wolf who only leaves her alone when she hurts herself. The only time she has ever felt respite was when she had her dog, Amaryllis. This is a floral-tinged story about not thinking we‘re worthy of love, and mental illness, and what those👇🏼

I love a good single author collection and this one is great. She has a story that rifts on a Christmas Carol that is 3 ghosts of ex bf‘s visiting an about to be bride on Halloween that is great. There is the one in the back called Flowers for Amaryllis that has to do with mental health and addiction that is also queer. And it‘s so affecting. And my favorite has to do with 4 girls trick or treating going up 1 by 1 to the haunted house and 👇🏼

Reggie knocking wondering if the door will open. It‘s the simplest yet the most dreadful. Give this collection a try. #21daysofHalloween Day 4 3y

@Reggie Thank you so much for the awesome books and brownies! Your reviews for these two books are great and I can‘t wait to get to them. Although the Carmen book will have to rest facedown if I leave it on my nightstand,LOL. I love the card! Thank you again, sweet friend. 🙂

P.S. This post is a little late. The package was waiting for me when I got home Thursday night. The brownies were delicious.

Reggie Funny story, sent packages to you and Sue from Vermont last Saturday and she got hers Monday. You‘re my Texas neighbor. I was kinda shocked, lol, maybe there‘s some NM VT pipeline I don‘t know about. . I hope you like those books and yeah that cover is no joke. Enjoy!!!! 5y
Chrissyreadit Nice! 5y
Bookzombie @Reggie Part of me thinks it‘s our post office that causes the delay. They aren‘t super reliable. 🙄 Thank you again! 5y

This book of short stories was amazing. I felt like these stories were a combination of what an addict lives and experiences everyday. The pain, heartbreak, struggle, and little victories.

Holy crap, look at that cover!! These 13 tales were pretty good. Some were short, some ended in vapor, some really tugged on my insides, some kinda freaked me out. Part of this book was being on that scary ride or going through the haunted house, and laughing when it was all over. Part of it spoke of the real horrors of life that can keep you down. This was good. I look forward to reading more of Christa Carmen. A Halloween worthy pick!!

erzascarletbookgasm Eeeek! That cover.. 5y

Taken from the story, “All Souls Eve,” I really liked this take on Dicken‘s A Christmas Carol, where 3 dead exboyfriends come to show a bride her past on the night before her wedding. Good stuff.

charl08 Wow. Great quote. 5y
Reggie @charl08 Thanks, it was part of a really good story. 5y
