By the creators of Death Note! The mystery behind manga-making revealed! R to L (Japanese Style). Is becoming a successful manga artist an achievable dream or just one big gamble? Average student Moritaka Mashiro enjoys drawing for fun. When his classmate and aspiring writer Akito Takagi discovers his talent, he begs Moritaka to team up with him as a manga-creating duo. But what exactly does it take to make it in the manga-publishing world? Moritaka is hesitant to seriously consider Akito's proposal because he knows how difficult reaching the professional level can be. Still, encouragement from persistent Akito and motivation from his crush push Moritaka to test his limits!

Pickpick

This is one of my favorite series but a lot of people stop after the first book because of the sexism. Japan is a very sexist country. The female characters change their behavior to maximize their chances in a society that is against them. The authors are not sexist themselves, I think. I've read a lot of their work. They are pointing out a negative of Japanese society and show how women in Japan must play the system.

Since almost everything I've read this month is manga/comics and I'd been feeling guilty about it, this article arrived just in time.

Caroline2 I do think there is a massive flaw in the whole Goodreads challenge thing that it doesn't take into account pages read. There's a few big books I want to read but I must admit, I groan and think that'll take me weeks to get thro and put me behind my target!!! Daft really when you think about! 🙄 😂 does it really matter how many books we read?!??!?! 🤔 7y
Bks4Wrms Thanks, a good reminder. Something I think I needed to hear too. 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I just started keeping up with it this year... I just thought it would be interesting to see how many I read in a year... I don't read comics so I'm counting actual books. Your right about it not counting pages read. I've been reading all my life so you're right again it really doesn't matter lol I have Mississippi Blood to read and it's 800 pages or so! It should count for 2!! 🤣😂 @Caroline2 7y

Sace @Caroline2 I try to take pages into account. Luckily you can see that on Goodreads. So like there were two years in a row where I read the same number of books, but I tried to read more pages that second year. I had the same number of books goal, but challenged myself to read more pages. 7y
Sace @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think I gravitate toward comics because I often don't have a lot of reading time. Well, my reading time is more like I get big chunks of time during school holidays and that's about it, so when I do have time I try to cram as many books in as I can. Comics and manga are fast reads so I can get more done. 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Sace I have to admit I've never read a comic 😳😳 maybe I should try them because I don't have a lot of time on the days I work because I work 12 shifts... 7y
Sace @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I highly recommend comic/graphic novel/manga reading. When you don't have a lot of reading time, it's a perfect way to feel like you're still reading and finishing books. 7y
RealLifeReading I don't think there's any need to feel guilty about reading comics and manga! 7y
Sace @RealLifeReading it's interesting how common the guilt seems to be. In June alone I've seen two articles about comics and "real" reading. 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Sace which ones would you suggest? 7y
Sace @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks oh gosh. What kind of books do you like? 7y
Sace @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I'm currently really into the Food Wars manga, but there's a lot of fan service for boys (meaning boobs) but the cooking aspects are fascinating. Maus is a pretty famous and classic graphic novel, but it's heavy (Holocaust.) There's lots of shojo (romantic) manga that's good but it can feel young at times. I loved Card Captor Sakura. 7y
Sace @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and of course Bakuman. I'm only partway through the first volume but I like that it's about making manga. 7y
Sace @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and duh! There are now so many graphic novel adaptations of novels! I know there's one for Kindred. I haven't read the graphic novel but the novel was great! 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I have been reading a lot of Holocaust stuff... I will check those out!! Thank you! 😊😊❤️ @Sace 7y
Lcsmcat This is why I like Litsy challenges more. I set my GR challenge low on purpose to dedicate myself to reading longer books this year. 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Sace thank you!!!! You're the bomb!! 👊🏻 7y
RealLifeReading I used to feel like that too but I think as my older boy is starting to read on his own, I like to encourage him with comics. I have a fear of my boys not wanting to read when they're older so I'd rather have comics lovers than boys who hate reading. 😢 7y
Sace @RealLifeReading and as a teacher I'm all about letting students read what they love and enjoy. So many of my students hate reading and it breaks my heart. I love the way you expressed it. Comics lovers over hating to read. 😊 7y
SaturnDoo A book is a book is a book. If you read it, count it towards your challenge. It doesn't matter what genre or format. I am the type as long as you are reading something I'm happy☺ 7y
Lmstraubie We really have to stop defining what reading is, especially for kids. Reading is interacting with text. Period. End of story. 7y
Sace @Lmstraubie *applause* well said! I will remember that when I start beating myself up about my reading habits. 😊 7y
Lmstraubie @Sace If you have reading habits your good 😉👍 7y
minkyb @Lmstraubie short and correct! ❤️ 7y
Caroline2 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Maus is a fantastic graphic novel about the holocaust!!! 👍🏻 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Caroline2 thanks everyone!! 📚❤️ 7y
Lmstraubie @minkyb Thank you ☺️ 7y

Mehso-so

Great manga about two boys who want to create manga, but I can't wholeheartedly recommend it because of eyebrow-raising sexism. Fun to read, though!
