On Rape
On Rape | Germaine Greer
2 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
It's time to rethink rape. Centuries of different approaches to rapeas inflicted by men on womenhave got us nowhere. Rape statistics remain intractable: one woman in five will experience sexual violence. Very few rapes find their way into court. The crucial issue is consent, thought by some to be easy to establish and by others impossible. Sexual assault does not diminish; relations between the sexes do not improve; litigation balloons. In On Rape Germaine Greer argues there has to be a better way.

A slim 80-page essay about rape. Plain and simple. Rape statistics, the pressures put on women in trials, how relations between the sexes on a wider scale aren't improving against the backdrop of the constant menace of rape. Greer argues for the need to rethink our assumptions about rape and address the power dynamics behind it in this short, accessible text that added to another of my current reads, Missoula by Jon Krakauer.

Read this on a flight to Melbourne today.
I had heard about it when it was published earlier this year. As usual when reporting about Greer the media grabbed hold of it with a “Greer minimises rape” headline.
She raises some interesting points and I‘m glad I took the time to read it. Will be passing it on to my husband (who bought it for me) to read.

CarolynM I've always thought that she says things she only half believes just to get them talked about. I admire her for really not caring what anyone thinks of her. Enjoy your visit to Melbourne. Are you here for long? (edited) 5y
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM We‘re just here for the weekend for my nephew‘s wedding 😊. 5y
