Cassandra Darke is an art dealer, mean, selfish, solitary by nature, living in Chelsea in a house worth 7 million. She has become a social pariah, but doesn't much care. Between one Christmas and the next, she has sullied the reputation of a West End gallery and has acquired a conviction for fraud, a suspended sentence and a bank balance drained by lawsuits. On the scale of villainy, fraud seems to Cassandra a rather paltry offence - her own crime involving 'no violence, no weapon, no dead body'. But in Cassandra's basement, her young ex-lodger, Nicki, has left a surprise, something which implies at least violence and probably a body . . . Something which forces Cassandra out of her rich enclave and onto the streets. Not those local streets paved with gold and lit with festive glitter, but grimmer, darker places, where she must make the choice between self-sacrifice and running for her life.

Enjoyed this loose reimagining of A Christmas Carol. Great artwork.

Wonderfully cosy, this graphic novel mystery was sweet, funny, character driven, and just a little bit Christmassy which I wasn‘t expecting. Cassandra, a mean old woman with a conviction for art fraud, winds up helping to solve a murder. I loved the way this portrayed london particularly.

Binged this in a day thanks to a train journey. Nice little crime mystery and also pleasing to read something set in the UK for a change.

Seems like 2019 may be the year of the graphic novel for me. It‘s not a genre that I‘ve previously read. It started with the beautiful Christmas present (left) from my lovely son which needs no explanation. Cassandra Darke was fantastic, loved her contrariness. And I loved that the cover brought to mind Ignatius from paperback cover of Confederacy of Dunces, a long ago read.

A story about the modern female version of Scrooge seemed appropriate for Christmas Eve. Very good so far.

batsy Ooh, I love Posy Simmonds! 5y
Aimeesue @batsy Not being a Brit, I‘d never heard of her until this last issue of Slightly Foxed arrived; Simmons did the inside cover portraits of the staff, which were wonderful. Looking forward to reading her stuff! (edited) 5y
batsy I've only read Gemma Bovery by her, but it's enough to have me declare her a fave 😆 I look forward to discovering more of her work, too. 5y
