The stooping figure of my mother, waist-deep in the grass and caught there like a piece of sheep‘s wool, was the last I saw of my country home as I left it to discover the world.
Phew!
I discovered a lovely illustrated copy of this at a little library. Loving it.

Historical/literary snippet. At the memorial to Kingsford Smith's 1933 record breaking flight across the Tasman.
Gerringong- a tiny town with five street libraries. Loved the door knobs on this one.
1. Hamilton (twice)
2. I was lucky enough to go to the debut of the play of TKaM on Broadway when I was in NY
3. Anything Shakespeare and I saw the first Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar many years ago and have never forgotten it

Having read and enjoyed the Brunetti series, I was keen to read this memoir. It's episodic rather than linear. Fascinating insights - her childhood, teaching career, gardening and ageing.
Who knew that she lost her thesis on Mansfield Park when fleeing Iran in the 70s?
Not much about life in Venice or her writing life but a delightful read. Having tried to trace Brunetti's footsteps in Venice, loved her letter to tourists visiting the Questura.
An impulse buy at Manly Lifeline. Not an author I know of, but I'm always interested in NZ writers. Fascinating historical fiction about a catastrophic eruption in the late 1800s, including the destruction of the famed Pink and White Terraces.
Apparently it was aimed at 9 -12 year olds, but the content could be distressing (searching for survivors and bodies). Sobering read in the light of the 2019 Whakaari eruption.

‘Are we to gather that Dreadnought is asking us all to do something dishonest?‘ Richard asked.
Apparently it‘s unusual to open a novel with dialogue.

Very sad to return this to the Library, such a lovely story. It was overdue, but I needed to finish it first!
Highly recommended.
That Veronica and I were given keys and told to come early on a frozen Saturday in April to open the school for the ‘Our Town‘ auditions was proof of our dull reliability.
Loving this novel - makes me want to watch/read Our Town

When the doctor had gone, and the two women from the village he had been waiting for were upstairs shut in with her dead father, Lucy went out into the garden and stood leaning on the gate staring at the sea.

Actually 132 atm because GR doesn't recognise one of the books I read.
Lovely writing but some of the 1960s attitudes to cat ownership (eg desexing) are a bit jarring. From a different time.

Given the date of publishing and listed authors, I think this is Heerey's diary - A Tasmanian's story of the Great War.
An interesting read, but no annotations to provide context of life at the front his references to colleagues, or decipher his abbreviations
