Somebody Else's Kids
Somebody Else's Kids | Torey Hayden
"Were all just somebody else's kids . . . " A small seven-year-old boy who couldn't speak except to repeat weather forecasts and other people's words . . . A beautiful little girl of seven who had been brain damaged by terrible parental beatings and was so ashamed because she couldn't learn to read . . . A violently angry ten-year-old who had seen his stepmother murder his father and had been sent from one foster home to another . . . A shy twelve-year-old from a Catholic school which put her out when she became pregnant . . . "What do we matter?""Why do you care?"They were four problem children-put in Torey Hayden's class because no one else knew what to do with them. Together, with the help of a remarkable teacher who cared too much to ever give up, they became almost a family, able to give each other the love and understanding they had found nowhere else.

This was an easy read. The book didn't have so many tragic stories as I expected and that made it a bit easier to read although the subject it self isn't that light. So if you are looking for a easy story to start with Torey Hayden this might be a good one.

Decided to pick up Torey Hayden book from my shelf. It's been years since I've read any of these. I'm so intrigued to see wether I still like it as much. 🤔

this might be the first ever book i read for school that i actually enjoyed. some of the things torrey said struck me as odd but i feel like this taught me a lot about being a compassionate and willing teacher.

So this book is a true story. This little boy who is autistic fell off the monkey bars at school and got hurt. He needed stitches but the doctor refused him anesthetic bc he‘s autistic and “we” don‘t have feelings. How messed up!

#FunFridayphoto Pretty sure this was my first "adult" book. I checked out all her books in middle school from the school library. I remember the librarian questioning if they were too adult for me. It made me wonder why they would then be available. Hmmmm. @Liberty

BookishMarginalia I read those too, at that time in my life 8y
