Being LGBT and Having Autism
Is Actually Pretty Common
When I was born in the autumn of 1991, doctors determined that I was born male. To be fair to the doctors, as well as my parents, it was a statistically sensible assumption to make.

British video game journalist Laura Kate Dale writes with straightforward style about being trans, gay & autistic. Particularly interesting are unique challenges of, for example, queer-friendly events not being autism-friendly—and of the author‘s strategies to cope. Another: she carries gender change & name change paperwork plus passport with her always, because she‘s had her cards cancelled when shop staff believe she‘s being fraudulent. #LGBTQ

According to an international study by Dr Mark Stokes from La Trobe University in Melbourne Australia, a higher than average percentage of individuals on the autism spectrum identified as non-heterosexual, felt at odds with their assigned at birth sex, or suffered symptoms of dysphoria as a result of transgender status.

This is a pretty interesting memoir. It has a very clear and concise tone, which is really great and admirable at times but sometimes it does make for a bit dry reading. Regardless: I do suggest this memoir on the intersection of gender, sexuality, and neurodiversity!

I have read a couple things since my last post, but recently finished this ARC and loved it so much. Austism isn't something I'm knowledgeable about, but queer stuff is, and learning about the intersection between the two from someone's personal perspective through this book has been eye-opening.

This is very powerful account of growing up as an autistic young person who, while trying to understand and cope as a 'neuroatypical', also identifies as a girl, despite being born male. Her voice is so authentic and at times, it is very hard to read as Dale is honest about her struggles, both mentally and physically. But this should be a compulsory read for anyone who wishes to bring some humanity and compassion 👇👇👇.
