Peter Carey's astonishing debut novel is a fast-moving extravaganza, both funny and gripping, about a man who, recovering from death, is convinced that he is in hell.

4 books I #DNF #30JuneBooks

Lindy I gave up on Sense and Sensibility too. 👯‍♂️ 5y
Nute I haven‘t read The Wings of the Dove yet. I hope hope hope that I‘m going to enjoy it because I loved the movie. 5y
CarolynM @Lindy I really like P&P, Emma and Persuasion, but 100 pages into S&S I thought "why am I reading this?" . 5y

CarolynM @Nute I had to stop because there were too many times when I just didn't understand what I was reading - whole sentences that made no sense to me at all! 5y
Nute I feel like that is a risk factor with every Henry James novel.😬 5y
Centique Oh dear, I‘m planning to attempt Proust next year! At least I‘m forewarned 😂😂 5y
CarolynM @Centique I liked the first volume a lot and the second one too, but I got really frustrated with the narrator early on in volume 3 to the point that I couldn't take it anymore. I intended to go back and finish it but I've never got there. 5y
Centique @CarolynM oh that‘s good to hear - I‘ll be pleased if I do volume 1 anyway. I‘m planning on a year of classics so I might burn out if I go too hard! 😬 5y

#dysfunctionalfamilies #photoadaynov16 one of Peter Carey's earlier works, a good successful man living in quiet suburbia with a seemingly livening family dies of a heart attack but is resuscitated(?). Observing his world with fresh eyes he quickly comes to the conclusion that he is in hell. Is his family as perfect as he thinks and if not what should/can he do about it. Was made into a quirky little movie in the 80's.

HIs great talent in life was to be a Good Bloke. He could walk into a room and sit down and everybody would be happy to have him, even if all he ever did was smile, for they imagined behind the mustache, behind the smile it hid, something sterner, more critical and yet, also, tolerant, so that when he smiled they felt themselves approved of and they vied with each other to like him best.
