Ink Knows No Borders
Ink Knows No Borders: Poems of the Immigrant and Refugee Experience | Patrice Vecchione, Alyssa Raymond
18 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
A poetry collection for young adults brings together some of the most compelling and vibrant voices today reflecting the experiences of teen immigrants and refugees. With authenticity, integrity, and insight, this collection of poems addresses the many issues confronting first- and second- generation young adult immigrants and refugees, such as cultural and language differences, homesickness, social exclusion, human rights, racism, stereotyping, and questions of identity. Poems by Elizabeth Acevedo, Erika L. Snchez, Samira Ahmed, Chen Chen, Ocean Vuong, Fatimah Asghar, Carlos Andrs Gmez, Bao Phi, Kaveh Akbar, Hala Alyan, and Ada Limn, among others, encourage readers to honor their roots as well as explore new paths, offering empathy and hope for those who are struggling to overcome discrimination. Many of the struggles immigrant and refugee teens face head-on are also experienced by young people everywhere as they contend with isolation, self-doubt, confusion, and emotional dislocation. Ink Knows No Borders is the first book of its kind and features 65 poems and a foreword by poet Javier Zamora, who crossed the border, unaccompanied, at the age of nine, and an afterword by Emtithal Mahmoud, World Poetry Slam Champion and Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Brief biographies of the poets are included, as well. It's a hopeful, beautiful, and meaningful book for any reader.

Another #BlameItOnLitsy read and I‘m glad I did. This collection of poetry from the voices of immigrants and refugees is emotional, thought-provoking, and well worth a read.

New word for the day. Happens to be a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I didn‘t know there was a word for it.

OutAndAbout Interesting. Wonder when you use that vs redundant? 3y
megnews @OutAndAbout I didn‘t even think of redundant! 😂 maybe they‘re interchangeable? I‘d never heard tautology before. 3y
OutAndAbout @megnews. Well looking for the difference was a fun Google spiral. My favorite line: “Note that when you put both halves of the logical tautology together, it feels a bit redundant, just like a verbal tautology.” There is a difference but I can‘t explain it yet. 3y
megnews @OutAndAbout is redundant the adjective used to describe the tautology, which is a noun? Is that the difference? 3y
OutAndAbout @megnews seems more complicated than that. Tautology appears to be phrasing or concepts, redundant is words or related to nouns (as in “we bought a computer and made you redundant”😂). https://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-tautology.html is the best explanation I‘ve found. Although none of the “experts” appear to agree. 3y

This is a brave, moving, and hopefully empathy building collection of poems on the refugee and immigrant experience by an extremely talented group of young writers. In their courage to share, they beautifully illuminate our joint humanity as well as the fear and pain caused by racist and nationalistic rhetoric. Highly highly recommend (Although this is technically classified as YA I would recommend it equally as much to adult readers)

Reading this has had so many beautiful friends, that are first generation Americans, pop up in my mind. My parents refer to where I live as the “United Nations” and I am so happy to live where I do! I have been touched by so many wonderful people and have learned about so many cultures and lifestyles it warms my heart. This book of poems is powerful and amazing and wonderful and frustrating and hopeful and powerful. I highly recommend it!
