One summer night, Edward Alcott gives in to temptation and kisses Lady Julia Kenney in a dark garden. However, the passion she stirs within him is best left in the shadows as she weds his twin, the Earl of Greyling. But when tragedy strikes, to honor the vow he makes to his dying brother, Edward must pretend to be Greyling until the countess delivers her babe. After her husband returns from a two-month sojourn, Julia finds him changed. Bolder, more daring, and more wicked even if he does limit their encounters to kisses. With each passing day, she falls more deeply in love. For Edward the embers of desire sparked on that long-ago night are quickly rekindled. He yearns to be her husband in truth. But if she discovers his ruse, she will despise him and English law prevents him from marrying his brother s widow. Yet he must dare to risk everything and reveal his secrets if he is to truly take all."

Mehso-so

This book taught me 2 things - there used to be an English law that people could not marry the siblings of their deceased spouses. And a throw away comment (this time about baby formula in a book set in 1770s) can send me down a deep Google rabbit hole.
This book is ridiculous. I didn't enjoy the first bit mostly b/c him not telling her who he is while she thought he was her husband had me thinking about sexual assault - not sexy
Writing was silly

ChaoticMissAdventures I waver between pan and so-so but I finished it and sort of understand the logic of the whole debacle. So I guess so-so. 1y
Ruthiella But wait! Was there baby formula in the 1700s? Please let me know before I jump down that rabbit hole! 😃 1y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Ruthiella ah! that is my own typo, I meant 1870s. Which is when it was invented, as we know it today. Before we used different combos of animal milk, but in 1865 German chemist Justus von Liebig invented what we still know today as baby formula, first in liquid, then in powered form a couple years later. Nestle quickly picked up on it and started developing it, and by 1897 Sears was selling 8 kinds in their catalogue! Book is set 1878. 1y
Ruthiella @ChaoticMissAdventures Thanks! I never would‘ve thought it was used so early. 1y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Ruthiella same! When she mentions it pretty flippantly I raced to look it up. Fell down a deep hole about wet nurses and different tools that were used to feed babies too. I don't even have or want children lol 1y

"As he tossed back his scotch, Edward considered stripping down to his trousers and racing barefoot over hill and dale, taking a plunge into an icy river, finding a wolf or wild hog to wrestle."

I am finishing this book if it can get my eyes stuck from how far back in my head my eyes just rolled ?

I don't read these books often probably because the writing is just ridiculous - which can be good sometimes but not often.

Romance like this is not my normal read, I am trying to branch out more and have read a few this year, this one I stumbled on through TikTok and if we judged a book by how much we think about it while not reading this one is up there.
Twins - 1 sensible and married & 1 a playboy, they go off on an African adventure and one dies, the married one. The Playboy comes home and in an effort to save the wife from shock & possible miscarriage playboy 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures Brother poses as husband "until the baby comes" I am obsessed with this wife not knowing who her husband is! I am not a twin, but they do run in our family and I know a few sets and honestly I cannot decide if I am offended for twins that they could swap like this or should I be impressed with his acting skills?? This all seems so unbelievable ? 1y

I have the day off so took Peri on an afternoon walk. It was in the upper 20s, which almost felt balmy after the below zero temps we've had the last few days. While walking I listened to the Learning the Tropes podcast episode where they talk about the tagged book. They had author Sarah MacLean on as a guest. It was a really enjoyable and funny episode.

This book is CRACKED OUT. An Earl dies on a jungle expedition and makes his ne'er-do-well twin bro swear he will *pretend to be him* so his preggo wife won't get upset and lose the baby. What could go wrong with THAT gem of a plan? Pretty much a regency Sweet Valley High book. I'm not complaining.

ColleenLindsay This review right here is why I love Litsy. "Pretty much a Regency Sweet Valley High." ? 8y
