My Past and Thoughts | Alexander Herzen

A Russian delivery from the postman this morning, a biography (by her grandson) of Constance Garnett, who translated Turgenev, Chekhov, Herzen and Tolstoy, and met Tolstoy in 1894: and Garnett‘s translation of Alexander Herzen‘s My Past and Thoughts, (vol 1).
Faber Finds publications with their grey titles don‘t show up too well in photos.

fleeting Oh wow! I loved her translation of Anna Karenina. I've read hers and the Russian duo's - P&V - and prefer hers so much more. 5y
Severnmeadows @fleeting I bought the Pevear & Volokhonsky translation (a lovely hardback) of War & Peace, and enjoyed comparing paragraphs with Garnett‘s. I really like them both! The French passages in the P&V were a surprise- I had no idea that‘s how the novel was written. 5y
fleeting @Severnmeadows for whatever translated book, I think I'll still always get P&V's for the accessibility! I just felt that Garnett's was very lyrical. 😊 5y
