Caging Skies | Christine Leunens

An avid member of the Hitler Youth in 1940s Vienna, Johannes Betzler discovers his parents are hiding a Jewish girl named Elsa behind a false wall in their home. His initial horror turns to interest--then love and obsession. After his parents disappear, Johannes is the only one aware of Elsa's existence in the house and the only one responsible for her survival. By turns disturbing and blackly comic, haunting and cleverly satirical, Christine Leunens's captivating and masterful novel--sold in 16 countries and the basis for a major forthcoming film by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnorak, What We Do in the Shadows)--examines this world of truth and lies, laying bare the darkest corners of the human soul.

JoJo Rabbit was based on this novel. Really impressed by the film. Still trying to figure out what I make of this novel. The narrator, Johannesburg, is no hero. But then neither is Elsa, the object of his affections, hatred, indifference. Perhaps the only heroic characters are his mother and grandmother. Perhaps I‘m just too dense to understand the meaning of this book. But then again I may not be.

“The great danger of lying is not that lies are untruths, and thus unreal, but that they become real in other people's minds.”

Seeing as the movie JoJo Rabbit is so popular I thought I'd dive into the book it is based on.
I am assuming it will be very different.

Did anyone else‘s ears perk up for the adapted screenplay award on last nights Oscars?

JoJo Rabbit is on my to-be-watched list.... but I had zero clue it was inspired by a book. Has anyone read it? Watched it? Read AND watched?

LoveToReadLiveToRead Watched it but not read it. I really liked it the film but, whilst it is a comedy, be prepared that it packs a lot more of an emotional punch than you might be expecting! 5y
MotionChickness @LoveToReadLiveToRead Thanks for the heads up! It did seem very drama filled for a comedy, which is intriguing. Given the subject matter I expect a few sobering moments... Curious if the book is more on the serious side than the comedic. 5y
TheLibrarian I‘ve heard of the book and movie before (separately) but didn‘t realize the movie was based off the book. 5y
Catherine_Willoughby Prefer the movie over the book. The second half was disturbing 5y
