My “maybe reads one book a year if that” boyfriend knows what excites me 😂😂

He has the Barnes and Noble Collectible edition of Dune (being his favorite book of all time) and is wishing the rest of the series is published in the same manner. 🤞

So glad Barnes and Noble has these abridged chapter-book classics for kiddos (and with super cute cover work!)

My six year old also wanted different books to keep her mind off things, so we hand picked this summer haul together!

And to update, thank you all for the kind words and recommendations for my dad. As it turns out, I am not ready to read on the topic like I thought I was. But I have each book on a list for when the time comes. I very much appreciate having a community like this to turn to for hard times ♥️ He starts chemo either this week or next, when scheduling gets worked out. So good vibes are needed! Diving into the tagged book in the meantime.

A Monster Calls | Patrick Ness

Hey friends... 2020 continues to just not be the year on my end. Last week, my dad was diagnosed with stage four liver & bladder cancer. His life expectancy isn‘t what we hoped for, and are all having a hard time dealing with it.

I am looking for novels for myself on coming to terms with losing my dad...? and also any recommendations for a six year old losing her granddaddy. Would prefer something with a hopeful outcome for her...

Thank you ♥️

MotionChickness We do have A Monster Calls as well as The Invisible String and Big Tree is Sick. 4y
Soubhiville I‘m so sorry to hear that. I can‘t think of anything off the top of my head, but I‘ll look at my shelves. 4y
Butterfinger I am so terribly sorry. I just checked out a book called The End of Your Life Book Club. It's a nonfiction account of a man who reads with his mom in a similar situation to yours. I will be thinking of you you and your family. 4y

Did anyone else‘s ears perk up for the adapted screenplay award on last nights Oscars?

JoJo Rabbit is on my to-be-watched list.... but I had zero clue it was inspired by a book. Has anyone read it? Watched it? Read AND watched?

LoveToReadLiveToRead Watched it but not read it. I really liked it the film but, whilst it is a comedy, be prepared that it packs a lot more of an emotional punch than you might be expecting! 4y
MotionChickness @LoveToReadLiveToRead Thanks for the heads up! It did seem very drama filled for a comedy, which is intriguing. Given the subject matter I expect a few sobering moments... Curious if the book is more on the serious side than the comedic. 4y
TheLibrarian I‘ve heard of the book and movie before (separately) but didn‘t realize the movie was based off the book. 4y
Catherine_Willoughby Prefer the movie over the book. The second half was disturbing 4y

I do not have a favorite author. Not because I have so many that I can't pick just one; just that I do not have *one specific* author of whom I follow so I can read all of their work. Is that taboo? I feel like everyone has a favorite author...

13 Reasons Why | Jay Asher

I devoured this in high-school; and put it on my then list of top reads, but I haven‘t read it since. I watched season one of the Netflix show when it came out, and was shaken by the rawness of it. I didn‘t hate the show, but did feel strongly for those who may have watched it and found themselves worse off. I‘m curious to see how I‘ll perceive the book now that I‘m older, would say I‘m in a better mental state, and have a child of my own.

IamIamIam I read this a few years ago, in my late 30s, and I was very impressed with the level of responsibility that was placed on all the secondary characters and that very little attention was paid to the actual suicide aspect of the main character. I didn't watch the series because I thought the sensationalizing of the suicide took away from the story. Her story focuses on accountability, not the drama of suicide. 5y
mom2bugnbee @IamIamIam EXACTLY. I have two girls in HS & also read this a few years back. I thought then, & I think now, that it should be HS required reading. My now HS senior (read it as a frosh or soph) boycotted the show b/c she heard enough to know that it missed the point of the book. And now it's just become a whodunit in later seasons. Nothing wrong with a whodunit, but don't claim that it's a retelling of the book. 5y
MotionChickness @IamIamIam I agree. Up until now, as I realize they changed the way she committed her suicide was changed in the show (which made it more dramatic because that scene was hard to watch) I thought they were doing a great job of showing the accountability of the secondary characters. I personally thought it would have been a good tool for a parent or teacher to sit and watch with someone younger and point out those accountabilities... 5y
See All 11 Comments
MotionChickness @IamIamIam And to show the warning signs of someone asking for help... because those are missed a lot of the time. But I‘m starting to feel different as I wrap the audiobook up. I‘m still a fan, but my views on the show have changed. They could‘ve done better. Should have done better. 5y
MotionChickness @mom2bugnbee I refuse to watch the following seasons. They have nothing to do with the book aside from giving viewers a very Hollywood “what would happen after.” I feel like the point of the book was there, but was lost the moment they aired the episode of her committing. Which as @IamIamIam said sensationalizes it. Also, more people were mad at the secondary characters for being so ignorant and it didn‘t seem to click.... 5y
MotionChickness @mom2bugnbee didn‘t seem to click that those were the lessons the producers wanted people learn. It shouldn‘t of been a tv show, yet. It came before it‘s time and needed more thought on the production of it. 5y
LibrarianRyan Not gonna lie, I love the book, and I like the TV show, and am about to complete season 3. The book is all about Clay experiencing the tapes and making sense of what happens. He listens all in one night. I liked the TV show because you got to see what the side characters were thinking and feeling as they see others get the tapes. Why wouldn't person one just toss them. Why would they pass them on? You get that in the show as it takes Clay 5y
LibrarianRyan Weeks to listen to them. And it shows how he does and does not want to know. His questioning of himself “what did I do“. You do not really get that in the book. 5y
MotionChickness @LibrarianRyan The tossing of the tapes crossed Clays mind in the book, but Hannah said she had an extra set that would be released publicly if the tapes didn‘t make it all the way around. (I think Tony has the extra set? Which is mentioned in the show.) But I agree that it is nice to get more view points from the rest of the characters involved. But I do feel things could‘ve been portrayed much differently now that I‘m rereading! 5y
LibrarianRyan @Stephuhhnieee That's the other thing. Tony is just a mention in the books. An almost non-character. They expanded his role so much. And I actually liked it. 5y
MotionChickness @LibrarianRyan I agree! It was nice to know more about why Hannah trusted him and what he was up to while the tapes were being passed around. 5y
