Taking a break from the realities of life to enjoy the weather, drink a beer, and actually crack open a book.

This had a lot going for it to make it a spectacular horror novel but it fell flat for me. After awhile I found it boring and was disappointed (especially since there is a quote from Stephen King on the cover).

Oh how I love this book and the main character in my odd sort of way. How can I not love a book featuring women‘s empowerment in a literary horror novel? If Bret Easton Ellis wrote a book featuring a female Hannibal Lector like character, it would be this.

Sorry I‘ve been so MIA lately and oh how I miss this community!!! Litsy is the only social media I actually enjoy ❤️ Summary of why I‘ve been not active: one of the new cats (Sally) had a cancerous tumor and had to have her leg chopped off, came out as queer, going through a divorce, and my dad‘s health has been declining. 2022 has been a great year so far 🤣

Pictured: Alice bestowing her great wisdom on me. #CatsofLitsy

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Annie seeks a fresh start after a breakup with her boyfriend. She takes a teaching position in a small town where everyone seems to be friendly and rents a cute place (minus all the spiders). Soon she befriends Sophie, who seems so refreshing and cool, but soon Annie begins to notice that something is off.

If you are looking for an actual horror/scary read, choose another book. The Return by the same author was spookier to me.

Laughterhp So many spiders in this book! 8mo

It‘s a rare occasion when both cats are on the same bed snuggling me. Alice is snuggled in the crook of my arm (don‘t mind her bald spots) and Sally is between my legs on top of my wedge pillow 😂

Over half way done with this monster of a book. It‘s been a while since I‘ve read anything over 400 pages!

perfectsinner Great book and adorable kitties 😻 9mo
TheLibrarian @perfectsinner Sally and Alice say thank you! 9mo
Bookzombie Are the cats at least tolerating each other now? I know you were told they are a pair, but found out they weren‘t. 9mo
TheLibrarian @Bookzombie The b&w one (Alice) always hisses at the other. Alice is tolerating Sally a little more but not too much. Thankfully Sally either ignores the hissing, runs away, or occasionally entices it 🤣 It‘s so weird because when we got them, they always hid right next to each other. But it‘s super rare when I get to cuddle them both at the same time. 9mo

Romance isn‘t my most favorite genre but this sounded like fun and good break between all the horror books for the month of October.

It was cute but the pacing seemed a little off to me and there wasn‘t much substance. The ending felt super rushed compared to the rest of the book too. Overall just a so-so.

I‘ve been reading this book the past couple days. Hoping to finish it today!

Cat update: Don‘t believe when a shelter says a pair is bonded. They may have been dropped off together but they don‘t get along. I have to split my time between them and it‘s nerve wracking, causing stress and anxiety, plus guilt.

Picture: top is Alice and bottom is Sally

kspenmoll I am so sorry! We were lucky; our feral brother & sister are bonded, but the male does at times chase the female , try to mount her & bite her in her neck which hurts!!!!You just never know with shelter cats. 10mo
TheLibrarian @kspenmoll Thanks! They hide together semi-okay but I always feel bad that one always gets left out. I definitely could be overthinking/feeling this since I was so used to one cat. Glad yours mostly get along! 10mo
mcipher I wouldn‘t worry too much - I have three and the attention level varies greatly among them depending on day and their moods, but they are all happy and get plenty of love without seeming to get jealous at all ♥️ I tend to have the two that don‘t get along as well cuddled up on my lap every evening and my third who‘s less snuggly sits by my head 😆 9mo
See All 9 Comments
TheLibrarian @mcipher I‘d love to get at that level. These 2 don‘t like being on the same furniture together even if I‘m in between them. They are about to spend a week without me and aren‘t going to enjoy it. My husband will be home for the majority but they don‘t like him much yet. 9mo
mcipher I hope it gets better! 9mo
TheLibrarian @mcipher Thank you! It‘s interesting that they lived together before, were kept in the same cage at the shelter, and were labeled as a bonded pair. I‘m like definitely not bonded 🤣 9mo
Bette I hope Alice and Sally are getting along better. I got caught up in your thread…we just got kitten siblings. And boy, they are really bonded. We‘ve had to make many vet trips, they yell if they are separated so they both go in the same carrier. We would take Molly into a separate room to give her meds and could hear Joey howling. And then Molly cries when we take Joey. It‘s been an 9mo
Bette Adjustment, let me tell ya. 👍🤞 9mo

There is just something about how Ed Tarkington writes that I love. His earlier book I also enjoyed.

Charlie Boykin comes from a poor, single parent family. He ends getting a scholarship into an elite private school. A bit of a coming of age story but also a story about wealth, class, friendships, loyalties, and family. At times this book made me frustrated with some of the characters but in a good way because that‘s how life works.

My July #BOTM picks. I had pre-ordered signed copies of Survive the Night and The Personal Librarian already. Starting the tagged, 56 Days, this evening.

Librariana I am currently reading (and loving!) 1y
TheLibrarian @Librariana I‘ve heard great things! Normally I‘m not a ‘romance‘ reader but this sounded good. Hope you keep on loving it! 1y

I LOVED No Exit but this was just too far-fetched and repetitive (causing it to be a tad boring). 😭

Darn you Target and your B2G1!! Missing from picture is Star Eater.

#bookhaul #bookmail

wanderinglynn I feel you. BAM is also doing a B2G1. It‘s sooo hard to limit myself! 1y
TheLibrarian @wanderinglynn It really is! I tried doing Target instead of Amazon but ended up scoring a few on Amazon too 😭 1y
Desha Wait, what? B2G1 at Target? If it‘s still going on I must go! 👏🏻📚📚📚📚📚 1y

TheLibrarian @Desha Sorry for not seeing this earlier. No they stopped the deal a few weeks ago. They do it sporadically throughout the year though! 1y
Desha @TheLibrarian Well, your post got me to Target and a book haul anyways! Got three new books...yay! 📚📚📚thank you! (edited) 1y
Desha @TheLibrarian I got “Rabbits” as well!! ☺️ 1y

Hooray - I made it through this book!! 🤣

This book was a drag. It‘s been compared to the The Virgin Suicides (yay!) and The Girls (meh) but for a lot of reasons, it doesn‘t even compare. Most “cult” fiction books I‘ve read are meh, so if you have any recommendations, please tag them for me!

TW: animal cruelty

BookishMarginalia I hated The Girls. 1y
TheLibrarian @BookishMarginalia You would definitely hate this book. This made The Girls look better in my opinion 😱 1y
BookishMarginalia 😳😳😳 1y
vivastory Seeing you mention cult fiction reminds me that I need to read Courtney Summers latest, although I've heard so many negative reviews... 1y
TheLibrarian @vivastory I didn‘t mind that one - it was definitely a faster pace than this one. The Project wasn‘t as good as Sadie though (in my opinion). 1y

My workplace announced Friday work days end at noon during the summer. Ran some errands and on a whim I stopped at a random beer store. They ended up having one of my favorites (Golden Road Mango Cart) which is unheard of in PA. Starting the tagged book while enjoying the nice weather and beer. And yes, that‘s a straw for my beer 😂

DrexEdit Yeah, but you have to cover it to keep the bees out, right? 😄 Sounds like a perfect Friday afternoon! 1y
TheLibrarian @DrexEdit That‘s also an excellent point! 1y

Last week I picked up a large portion of my Independent Bookstore Day order! Still waiting on a few more titles but “In the Tall Grass” was sold out in person but the lovely owners still managed to snag me a copy. #SupportLocal

Are there any titles that I should move to the top of my tbr pile?

The Good Sister: A Novel | Sally Hepworth

Pickpick

I devoured this book in one day! Rose and Fern are twin sisters. Rose is the responsible one and Fern is the quirky one. Both are keeping secrets.

The ending/twist wasn‘t that shocking to me and was pretty predictable but I still really enjoyed the book! I also loved that Fern worked in a library and the reader got a peak into the public library world.

JenReadsAlot I'm looking forward to this one! 1y

How Lucky: A Novel | Will Leitch

I thoroughly enjoyed this gem of a novel. Not only was this part mystery, the story is also about friendship, hope, goodness, and is somehow also hilarious. The author wrote such a beautiful and memorable main character, Daniel, who is confined to a wheelchair due to a disease. I was actually curious why Will Leitch choose to wrote about the particular disease and if you are curious, make sure to read the acknowledgment at the end.

Traci1 I'm really looking forward to this one. I've only heard good things so far. 1y
jdiehr This was my #botm choice! I'm excited to start 🙂 1y

A Stephen King book that doesn‘t make me feel intimated due to the length! This was a horror-crime type book that kept me entertained. I enjoyed the Easter eggs he placed throughout the book.

Last night I was so determined to finish this book, that I was reading it at the beginning of my D&D game.

RachelAmphlett This is going to be my next read! 1y

Book haul from the other week from the tagged Indie! Currently reading Later by Stephen King.

Life‘s been crazy lately with house projects, work, and we finally decided to get new furniture! It‘s the first time in 12 years that me or my husband has actually purchased sitting furniture. We went all out and I can‘t wait for my super fancy reading chair for the library (my back can‘t either 😂). Hope everyone has been well! ❤️

vivastory New furniture is very exciting! 1y
TheLibrarian @vivastory So excited for the power headrest and lumbar support. The only downside is the 4-7 month wait period 😱 1y

Mehso-so

Although beautiful written, this book didn‘t captivate me like Ghost Wall did.

Each chapter is from the point of view of one of the vacationers at a rural area of Scotland that contains a handful of cabins. Each group of people staying in the cabins don‘t know or really talk to one another but they do take notice of each other.

SamAnne I liked Ghost Wall more—-it really builds to the end. But I enjoyed this one too. I want to read all of her books now. 1y
TheLibrarian @SamAnne Ghost Wall was one of my favorite books of the year when it came out but I struggled through this. Maybe too many characters? I tend to struggle with that. 1y

Lila moves back home after a bad breakup and begins working at her aunt‘s restaurant. After a confrontation with an ex-boyfriend, who wrote bad reviews of Lila‘s aunt‘s restaurant, the guy ends up dead. Soon Lila is a suspect and she begins her own investigation to clear her name.

Apparently I‘m in the minority on Litsy about my rating. Personally I thought this was a cute cozy mystery and I read it in one sitting (my husband made fun of me).

Crazeedi I love my kitchenaid!! It does my bun dough so nicely! 1y
vivastory Botm on IG recommended this for fans of Knives Out. Is that accurate? 1y
Laughterhp @vivastory Really? They did? I wouldn‘t say that‘s accurate... they‘re very different. They‘re both just mysteries 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
See All 11 Comments
vivastory @Laughterhp Yeah, I thought it was a bit strange. If it was accurate I'd definitely read it bc Knives Out was one of my favorite movies of last year. 1y
TheLibrarian @vivastory I wouldn‘t compare it to Knives Out at all and agree with @Laughterhp 1y
TheLibrarian @Crazeedi I‘ve only used it twice in 3 years 😬 1y
Crazeedi @TheLibrarian well it looks beautiful on your counter!😉❤ 1y

The 3rd (and last?) book in this middle grade series did not disappoint. I highly recommend The City of Ghosts series for anyone looking for a light, fun, easy read.

I love how the author takes the reader to a different country every book! This one was set in New Orleans.

alisiakae Is it the last book? 😭 I haven‘t read it yet but my daughter and I both love the series! 1y
TheLibrarian @4thhouseontheleft I think the author isn‘t planning on writing anymore in the series. At least for a while. 1y
mdemanatee Oh no. I missed this was potentially the last as well. 1y
