Clara Gutierrez is a highly-skilled technician specializing in the popular 'Raise' AI companions. Her childhood in a migrant worker family has left her uncomfortable with lingering in any one place, so she sticks around just long enough to replenish her funds before she moves on, her only constant companion Joanie, a fierce, energetic Raise hummingbird. Sal is a fully autonomous robot, the creation of which was declared illegal ages earlier due to ethical concerns. She is older than the law, however, at best out of place in society and at worst hated. Her old master is long dead, but she continues to run the tea shop her master had owned, lost in memories of the past, slowly breaking down, and aiming to fulfill her master's dream for the shop. When Clara stops by Sal's shop for lunch, she doesn't expect to find a real robot there, let alone one who might need her help. But as they begin to spend time together and learn more about each other, they both start to wrestle with the concept of moving on...

A beautiful story. Light and simple but full of sentiment. A little cozy novella for those who'd like to read something pleasant and refreshing.

This was a sweet little bite-sized novella—just the right size for devouring whole. The writing felt a little rough here and there, but the characters were wonderful. I loved seeing both Clara and Sal wrestle with their (very different) ingrained patterns and begin to let go. Another bonus: descriptions of teas I wish I could try. Pictured here is the Dorian Gray tea I own—a nod to the Dorian Gray tea in the book, which sounded tastier! 🫖☕️

I‘m worn out tonight and not feeling my current reads or my next on-deck book (Bellwether) in my current mood. #Clarissa is stressing me out and I know the next section of Maud will do some of the same. Prodigal God was fantastic when I started it on Tuesday, but tonight I need an escape. So I‘m going off-script and starting the tagged book, a cozy sci-fi novella borrowed from the friend I bought it for at Christmas. 😁

Such a sweet sapphic asexual romance novella: nostalgic and futuristic. Romance blooms between Sal, a sentient AI who owns a quaint tea shop, and highly-skilled technician Clara, who constantly has a strong case of itchy feet. I especially loved how Katz didn't pen the stereotypical, 'aces are robots', the most infuriating trope of all, so please don't be weary of this adorably ace sci-fi/romance book, as you'll be pleasantly surprised. Easy read.

A coder who works on robotic animal companions known as RAISES meets a centuries old sapient android running a tea shop and becomes enamored. This was sweet and cozy, but my biggest complaint is that it didn't feel particularly futuristic or sci-fi aside from the presence of robots. Enjoyable enough, though.

First Summer Splash square down, Touch Grass (read one book entirely outside). I read this while just a lil overheated in a tree's shade, and it's so short and sweet. I could read a whole series about Clara, Sal (and Joanie!, a la "And Peggy!"), but this was also enough. I'm fascinated with stories about AI/robots and the ways in which their rights and treatment change over time, and this has a sweet sapphic romance to bring the mood back up.

This was a cute, wholesome novella. Clara is a technician who repairs AIs. In Seattle, she meets Sal, an autonomous robot who's been running a tea shop for nearing 300 years. They develop a romantic partnership (Clara is asexual), and Clara helps Sal deal with increasingly frequent attacks on the tea shop from anti-robot criminals.
Overall, this was a light read. It was breath of fresh air and a great night-time read to wind down before bed.

A novella about a robot who runs a tea shop and a robotics mechanic/coder. A super sweet and lovely story featuring an ace f/f romance. So good.
