Another solid military history from Beevor. The Ardennes campaign in 1944 was the Germans last roll of the dice in the west, seeking to drive a wedge between the American and English armies hopefully forcing a negotiated surrender. A campaign which was based on an attempt to recreate past glories and ignored current realities; although caught by surprised the allies reacted quickly to blunt the speed of the German advance and defeat them in detail
