False Choices
False Choices: The Faux Feminism of Hillary Rodham Clinton | Liza Featherstone
4 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
Hillary Rodham Clinton is one of the most powerful women in world politics, and the irrational right-wing hatred of Clinton has fed her progressive appeal, helping turn her into a feminist icon. To get a woman in the White House, its thought, would be an achievement for all women everywhere, a kind of trickle-down feminism. In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, the mantle of feminist elect has descended on Hillary Clinton, as a thousand viral memes applaud her, and most mainstream feminist leaders, thinkers, and organizations endorse her. In this atmosphere, dissent seems tantamount to political betrayal. In False Choices, an all-star lineup of feminists contests this simplistic reading of the candidate. A detailed look at Hillary Clintons track record on welfare, Wall Street, criminal justice, education, and war reveals that she has advanced laws and policies that have done real harm to the lives of women and children across the country and the globe. This well-researched collection of essays restores to feminism its revolutionary meaning, and outlines how it could transform the United States and its relation to the world. Includes essays from prominent feminist writers Liza Featherstone, Laura Flanders, Moe Tkacik, Medea Benjamin, Frances Fox Piven and Fred Block, Donna Murch, Kathleen Geier, Yasmin Nair, Megan Erickson, Tressie McMillan Cottom, Catherine Liu, Amber ALee Frost, Margaret Corvid, Beln Fernndez, Zillah Eisenstein, and others. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This book is soooo interesting! I think everything in life can be analyzed from two sides, and we should always have that in mind. I have to get back to this for sure 👩🏻‍🎓

Collection of essays from leading feminist figures

Hornsby78 I have not read the book but I must say that reading the graphic above makes my eye twitch. Simply because a woman wrote something does not mean it is not sexist. Women adopt the patriarchal mindsets of society just as easily as men do and use those mindsets against other women every day of the week. Feminism is simply the radical notion that women are people. By that yard stick, Clinton is a feminist. 8y
KTOHARA I have not read the book and can‘t imagine ever doing so as the author of the FAQ certainly sounds extremely belligerent and may be militant. Furthermore, unlike Secretary of State Clinton, she is not advancing any feminist cause that will be long lasting. Even Bill Clinton is a feminist when he said "You get two for the price of one." and that "Hillary is smarter than I am!". I agree with you, Hornsby. Your yardstick is a good one that'll stand.. 6y

Bailedbailed

The essays' tone and content vary widely and none of them fully convinced me that HRC should be blamed for Bill Clinton's neoliberal policies. This is one of the most confusing things about HRC's public life, IMO- what she can take credit or blame for in her husband's presidency. That said, any recommendations for a good biography of HRC? OBJECTIVE- not attacking and not defending, just finding and giving the facts.
