so-so

A deaf woman has her identity stolen and she & her hearing boyfriend take off after the thief on a cross-country chase. I think the author meant to make the woman fierce & independent, but she came off more shrill & hysterical. when identity theft was a newer thing, you used to have trouble getting law enforcement to believe you. The whole story seemed a bit overwrought when compared to the relative seriousness of the crime.

Cayuse Out of curiosity, how did the author handle the deaf aspect of the lead character? Was it just a gimmick or did they use it as an opportunity to dig a bit deeper? 7y

DrexEdit @Cayuse maybe a little of both? Gimmick in that the character didn't necessarily need to be deaf for the story to work, but I also felt he was using it as a teaching moment, as we got an understanding of how difficult lip-reading is or how easy it is for deaf people to miss a ton of background information! That said, it was respectful because he didn't subject his character to pressure to change. She was just fine the way she was. 7y

Cayuse Interesting. I had a front-row seat to the deaf community many years ago and inasmuch as lip reading is even effective, deaf folks often told me they thought giving that skill to a deaf character in a book/play/movie was a bit of a cheat. Nice to see the author didn‘t use it like a silver bullet as a plot element/gimmick. 7y

ValerieAndBooks @DrexEdit I read this several years ago, when it first came out. I don‘t remember all the details now, but did feel it was one of the better portrayals by a hearing author of a Deaf character. I‘m Deaf myself, so I roll my eyes when Deaf characters are given super amazing lip reading powers. @Cayuse 7y

DrexEdit @ValerieAndBooks i did feel the author had taken some effort to find out something about Deaf culture to craft an honest character. In that regard this book was very good. @Cayuse 7y
