Police officers Quill, Costain, Sefton, and Ross know the worst of Londonor they think they do. While investigating a mobster's mysterious death, they come into contact with a strange artifact and accidentally develop the Sight. Suddenly they can see the true evil haunting Londons streets. Armed with police instincts and procedures, the four officers take on the otherworldly creatures secretly prowling London. Football lore and the tragic history of a Tudor queen become entwined in their pursuit of an age-old witch with a penchant for child sacrifice. But when Londons monsters become aware of their meddling, the officers must decide what they are willing to sacrifice to clean up their city, in London Falling by Paul Cornell.

Mehso-so

Push through the painfully slow first quarter, and this becomes a gripping urban fantasy about a group of modern London coppers who come face to face with an ancient evil. A grittier, darker cousin to the Rivers of London series, I've rated it So-So because the first few chapters had me about to DNF.

imyril I really struggled with this one. Slow to start and then rather grim; I much prefer the Witches of Lychford novellas (which isn‘t to say this series isn‘t good, just not to my taste) 5y
Lucy_Anywhere @imyril I'll have to check them out - thanks for the rec! To be honest, I probably would have DNFed this book normally, but self-isolation means I can read for hours 😁 5y

I found this book very interesting. Although the concept of police that can see the paranormal parts of London is not unique, this one really delved into how this affected the different members of the team in different ways. I will definitely continue withe the series.

"Her laugh sounded like small bones caught in an old throat." [this book was in the Sci Fi section at the library, but it's feeling a bit more like supernatural horror]
