I could hardly put this down. The first murder is chilling, right up there for me with Mrs. Inglethorp‘s death in He Mysterious Affair at Styles. Very well written. Really enjoying the Dalgliesh mysteries.
Fourth in her Adam Dalgleish series and a decided step up in terms of ambition and complexity. I didn't warm to Dalgleish in the first books -he struck me as too much of a woman's wish-fulfillment -but he has become more flawed and interesting in this one. A lot of characters to keep in mind but the plot is flawlessly executed. Despite being written in 1971 she still seems stuck in the fifties as regards social attitudes but that's a minor flaw.
Yet another wonderful story by the late P.D. James. I am reading this series rather slow so that I can enjoy it for a long time.
