In 1906, I was barely over fourteen years old, and it was my wedding day. My older sister, Helen, came to my room, took me by the hand, and sat me down on the bed. She opened her mouth to say something, but then her face flushed, and she turned her head to look out the window. After a second, she squeezed my hand and looked back in my eyes. She said, "You've always been a good girl, Maude, and done what I told you. Now, you're going to be a married woman, and he will be the head of the house. When you go home tonight after your party, no matter what he wants to do to you, you have to let him do it. Do you understand?" I didn't understand, but I nodded my head anyway. It sounded strange to me, the way so many things did. I would do what she told me. I didn't have a choice, any more than I had a choice in being born.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it. Some will be old, some will be new - don't judge me, I have a lot of books.

The life story of Maude told by her granddaughter, taking place between the early 1900's through the 60's. Maude was an astonishingly resilient woman who found strength in her faith and the few good women friends in her life. From an early age Maude become acquainted with loss. This tells how she made it through the great depression, both world wars while being the best wife and mother that she could be given the circumstances. On Kindle unlimited

Pretty depressing story, although I know this is how life was back in the early 19th century it‘s still hard to believe how women were treated back then, and how women used to just suck it up and do what was expected in order to prevent ‘gossip‘! ... Reminds me of stories my grandma would tell me :(

Maude was an amazing woman. Her life was one challenge on the heels of another and she persisted. Her resolve to keep going, no matter what, is to be admired. Reading this story about her life offers a view into American life at the beginning/mid 20th century. The perspective of a woman, and not one who went to college, but instead had limited educational opportunites and was expected to marry early, is rare.

"Maude" was a gloomy slog through an awful life, where good things only happen briefly and then are abruptly lost.

This book was so compelling and such a page-turner, I finished it in one day. Maude had a very hard yet interesting life, and if nothing else this book will make you thankful for so many things that we take for granted today. I found myself tearing up multiple times. It's sad but still a must read!
