No wonder this is the standard by which all memoirs of troubles childhoods are measured. This writing was beautiful, and I appreciated that she didn‘t sound bitter. You could tell that she still had a love for her parents even though “It‘s complicated” would hardly do justice to what she went through.

We‘ve had a lovely week off for a homeschool spring break of sorts. Projects were begun at least and lots of reading enjoyed. This was a sweet read to end the week. Reality hits tomorrow as we plunge back into our studies. It‘s tempting to let things slide since everything feels strange right now, even though as homeschoolers, this doesn‘t affect us as much as it does others. But education is a life, and it‘s good to have rhythm to our days.

I really enjoy Tsh‘s writing about intentional living. This one feels a little more preachy than her later art (books, podcasts, etc).

squirrelbrain So difficult to pick a favourite page in this book isn‘t it? This one....no this one.....or maybe this one....💙 5y

I read along in print while listening to the audio. The narrator is fantastic, added so much to the experience of this book. I can see why it‘s considered a modern classic!

SamAnne I read it decades ago and it was transformative!! I ended up reading all her other books. 5y

From this, I read the essay “On Fairy Stories” and the short story “Leaf by Niggle” for my #WellReadMom bookclub, and then read the other two selections to mark the book as read. :) I really enjoyed Derek Jacobi‘s narration of Leaf on Audible.

This one broke me out of a book slump. I found myself comfort-binging Sophie and Melanie‘s podcast (The Big Boo Podcast), and when I worked my way through all the archives, I decided I needed another book by one of them. I think this is the last one available as audio on my library apps, and I enjoyed it so much. Sophie is a laugh and a warm hug and I wish I knew her in real life.

I started this when the temps in Indiana dropped to single digits and I wanted something, anything, that would make me feel warm. The heat of Australia in the middle of a drought might not have actually helped but at least I got to listed to an Aussie accent for a while. :)

“I remember years ago a guy I knew told me that people going to England find exactly what they are looking for. I said I‘d go looking for the England of English literature, and he nodded and said, ‘It‘s there.‘ Maybe it is, and maybe it isn‘t. One thing‘s for sure: it‘s here. The blessed man who sold me all my books died a few months ago... If you happen to pass 84 Charing Cross Rd, kiss it for me? I owe it so much.”
