I'm not quite there yet on committing to Zero Waste but we are making an effort to move in that direction and this gave me some good food for thought on next steps.

BUT, this is very much zero waste HOME. Many of the ideas in here depend on someone else having taken care of the waste (e.g. purchasing open box electronics.) It's just pushed the waste to a different place.

AvidReader25 I‘ve been curious about this one. I like the idea, but sometimes these kind of books come across as preachy and privileged. 3y
Tamra It‘s very difficult to avoid plastic in grocery shopping, especially in small towns that don‘t have co-ops or other stores with bulk buying bins. Everything seems to be wrapped in plastic! 😒 3y
janeycanuck @AvidReader25 There is definitely unacknowledged privilege and there are a few places it gets a bit preachy but generally isn‘t too bad. She does say you need to make the choices that are right for your family and your situation at the beginning, which helps a bit. 3y

janeycanuck @Tamra Yes, this is a problem where I live, too, and I‘m in a medium-sized city that is very pro-environment (135k and we‘ve been called the Portland of Canada 🤪.) I‘d have no hope if I lived in a small town. If there‘s no alternative, you can‘t do much! It‘s been very hard through the pandemic, too - our grocery store puts only 2 or 3 things in each plastic bag for curbside pickup. 3y
janeycanuck @AvidReader25 just went and checked my shelves for the one I read last year, which I thought was quite good. Check it out if you haven‘t already 3y
AvidReader25 @janeycanuck that‘s good to know. I‘ll have to check it out! 3y

Finished on the ride home from work today. As someone who is interested in reducing the amount of trash her household produces, this was a great choice as Johnson is kind of the founder of the zero waste movement. I did a lot of research before reading this book & can‘t help but be a little disappointed at how much I already knew. Regardless, I will keep it for a while for her recipes. Read this if you‘re getting started with the zero waste.

The author‘s journey to zero waste is extreme but motivated me to start composting among other changes. I like the idea of refusing as a first method for reducing. But, I found that that she didn‘t address some of her choices, like eating meat, frustrating. And though she acknowledged her privilege I don‘t think she truly realizes how privileged she is. She stills seems to live in a bubble a bit disconnected from most people‘s experiences.

AmandaL I recently read this and felt the same (although I rated it a pick). Plus, many people don't have access to the kinds of resources she does. 6y
Blaire @AmandaL yes it was interesting and made me change some habits, but right she lives in sf which is particularly environmentally friendly and she is still clearly well-off. Also some of the habits she had to break caused a big 🙄. I think I‘d like a more compact version like 52 ways to reduce waste. 6y

Thoughtful writing full of valuable advice and resources. I will certainly be implementing many of her suggestions, though not all of them. She obviously takes this lifestyle to an extreme, but I think there are many good ideas individuals can implement without too much trouble.

I liked this book. The author definitely has done her research and does an amazing job living a zero-waste life. She never gets preachy. Although I don't think I could ever match what she does that's okay. There were some resonable and practical ideas.

CouronneDhiver I haven‘t read this book, but I draw the line at reusable toilet paper. 😆 7y
Lmstraubie @CouronneDhiver Lol she uses TP made from recycled paper. At one point in the book she says she thought about uses moss, but then thought better of it. She knew she had to draw the line somewhere. 😂 7y
