“In February, as the Polar night begins to approach the Antarctic, the young will begin a long journey north, migrating, following the pack ice as the Southern Ocean begins to freeze.“

I think this is a very unique book setup. You do not have to read the entire book cover to cover. A child can read a section of the book and still learn something. The watercolors depict the scenarios wonderfully. A child can learn from the pictures as well. I would use this book in my classroom and aim to read it around December-January time frame. It would be neat to read the journal of that date on that calendar day. This can engage students.
My Season with Penguins An Antarctic Journal by Sophie Webb shows a glimpse of the life of penguins during the two months of December - January. Webb is a biologist and added beautiful watercolor pictures that depict what she observed every day. She is studying a breeding colony of Adélie penguins on Cape Royds, an island off the coast of Antarctica. And because it is picture-oriented it can apply to a younger audience to learn about penguins.

I enjoyed the setup of this literature piece. Although it is very lengthy and content heavy, one could read any section or page(s) and still have the opportunity to learn something new. Thus, it's not necessarily a book you must read from cover to cover, because facts are present everywhere. I enjoyed the illustrators use of watercolors. The illustrations offer such accurate depictions thus providing learning experiences in themselves.

This book is wonderfully crafted as the watercolors depict the scenarios perfectly. I can use this book in my classroom to engage students in learning about penguins through the perspective of the author. Overall, the biography highlights how students can apply and expand their knowledge of penguins.

“In the evening, back at camp, the sky is gray and spitting snow. I forgot how much I hate going outside to pee when it's cold and windy.“
I would use this book in my classroom because it provides a lot of evidence found from studying penguins and could spark interest in children that could allow me to make lesson plans based off of their interest.
My Season with Penguins: An Antarctic Journal written by Sophie Webb. About scientists and journalists studying penguins. This book is formatted in journal form however I personally felt as though every page was way too wordy. This book may be of interest to a child who enjoys studying and journaling about different animals.
“Three Snow Petrels fly by, tracing the cliff edge in graceful arcs, brilliant white against the dark rocks and water and gritty realism forgot how much I hate going outside to pee when it's cold and windy“).
My favorite part about this book was the illustrations and I love how it is based off journal entries Sophie Webb writes.
My Season with Penguins: An Antarctic Journal by Sophie Webb published in 2000 was a cute informational book. It is about Sophie Webb who writes diary entries to track her two-month stay in McMurdo Antarctica. Beginning with the account of the five-day journey from San Francisco to the U.S. base, McMurdo, on Ross Island. The facts she gives I find very amusing. She goes to learn all about penguins and the illustrations are amazing. Great for kids!
